Preparing to get a little dirty in the morning.

Tom's new engine Cadenza has 1500mi or so on the new engine and has been switched to synth. It' been missing a lot and stalled this AM on his way to work and was hard restarting.

Valve adjustment time!

When I asked him if he didn't want to take it to the shop that switched out the engine, his response was "I’ve come to trust your mechanical capabilities more than Go Green (even if you can’t figure out how to work the kill switch ;-)"

Of course I'm still getting crap from him about not checking the kill switch when I couldn't get the scoot to start (it cranks when the switch is on, didn't know that).

I think he's trying to get lucky tonight. . .

VA went well, bottom valve tight as. . .

Scoot started right up and sounded much better.
Had to regap spark plug up from .020 to make it run without missing.

Going out for a ride soon to test it all out.
Only 55* today and overcast. I like riding in the sun. . .

BUT the hot tub is at 106* and that was nice to soak in!!

Okay, the 20 mile ride showed that under force (uphill) the scoot still misses and it backfired on a hill. After about 30 minutes the scoot evened out for thr most part with only very occasional missing. The valves are set to .005 for top and .006 for bottom, which I think is the exhaust.

Regapped the plug from .020 to .032.

While sitting or going downhill or coasting there is no missing and it runs great.

What could be the problem from here?

REALLY? .004? That seems too close for this bike but I can do it again and see if it's better.
And yes, stone bone cold.

Why would it backfire if the exhaust is wider that called for? Wouldn't it only backfire if it's too tight?

Ginny,

.005 and .006 are perfect for the Cadenza. You should hear the valves ticking... when they stop, you know it's time for another. The Cadenza's (GY6 long case) engines usually don't require another valve adjustment for 5K or so after this one.

I suspect you have an electrical problem here. Check the coil, first suspect, make sure the connections are good or just replace it. And while you're at it, pop in a new plug.

I thought the Cadenza would like the wider spacing, but I don't hear them ticking.

I did think of the air filter as I've never looked at it and it may be nasty and time for cleaning and replacing.

He rode it today and says it's borderline unridable it's missing so bad.

The plug looks great, perfect beige color and the threads are dark down two threads so I think it's good for the application.

I will check out the coil, may be time for a replacement.

The Roketa is no comparison to the Flyscooter. If Ginny had a Roketa, I would tell her .004 on both, but it's not. Flyscooters have slightly different heads and valves, though the two are interchangeable. Even the Lance and Flyscooter is different, coming from the same factory...

I know, I know... all the experts will jump in and say different, but you can take this layman's opinion on this since we work on A LOT of both.

Ginny, your plug sounds good... where is the timing mark on it? You should see a distinct line where it changes color in the grounding strap and it should be right in the bend. I still say you have a bad coil or plug wire.

The engine sounds great when it's idling. But it isn't ticking at all. It's problem is when it's under a lot of force, uphill or sometimes from a stop to full throttle.

I'm going to switch out the coil and plug and see what's what.

Ive got an email in to Daniel for a replacement coil. He should be riding again by weeks end. The do ship dern fast!! Meanwhile I'm letting Tom ride the Peg to get more miles on it for breakin.

I know valves being out of adjustment can cause running problems, but it really sounds like fuel or electric. Mine acted somewhat like yours last year, and, it did need some tweaking with the carb. However, the problem seemed to be aggravated by the coil and CDI.

I replaced the coil with a Bando coil, and replaced the CDI with the "New Racing" CDI, both fairly inexpensive on eBay. That made a big difference, eliminating the erratic missing, and this allowed me to concentrate on getting the carb right.

I'm convinced that both the factory coils AND CDI's on these scooters are pretty poor, and can "die slowly" giving you FITS in the process... LOL! Replacing them certainly cannot hurt, and, may save a lot of further frustration...
