Had to go get dinner this evening and I thought that I would take the scoot. Backed her out of the garage, turned the key on and cranked her over, wouldn't start. Continued to crank her over several times before it would even start to run. Finaly, it started. Now, I need to know what may be the culprit besides a valve setting if there is any. ( I noticed a puddle of gas on the ground and also a very good gas smell.) Hummmmmmmmmm., any sugestions?

Hi scooterran. I'm assuming the scoot is now running OK? If so, then a broken fuel line isn't the problem. Sounds like a momentary overflow due to the inlet needle valve either sticking or maybe some dirt got stuck on the valve seat. If the scoot runs OK now, there is a possibility this momentary fuel dump and hard start (flooding) may occur again. Have you changed out the original fuel lines and fuel filter?

scooterran, yes there is 2 valve settings, but that is not your problem, don't worry you will get to do that soon enough. Depending on what make of scooter you are riding fuel should not have kept flowing into the carb. The gas tank outlet is lower than the carb and the engine must be running for fuel to flow up to the carb bowl. For now just be very observant and after you stop riding watch for fuel drips on the ground, try to see where it comes from. There is a bowl carburetor bowl drain screw, some have it at the end of a aluminum cylinder at the end of a drain hose, down low near the left floor board, some might be directly on the carb bowl. If that screw has vibrated loose you will have the very symptom you mentioned.

1st. I am ridding a Mc-54-250B and a red, fast one just like ( you know who ) El Doctor Jr. Got to tell you that I pump the throttle several times between trying to start the scoot. Like 3 pumps each time. I'm probably flooding the carb while doing this but eventually it kicks over a couple of times and then it will start. I have a little over 9200 miles on it now. I did a valve setting somewhere around the 1200 mile mark and I believe it needs it again. I'm going to remove the plastics and then hook back up the battery and the CDI and try to start the scoot again. While I have the plastics off I'm going to cut out the bottom of the battery compartment for easy valve settings in the future. ( I read, therefore I learn ). I have a new carb setting in the garage for an easy exchange. Should the new carb be pre-set? Or do I have to try and set the screws ? Turn the screws in all the way and the back them out how many turns to start with? Cruiser, I changed out the fuel lines and the fuel filter when I did the pdi at around 600 miles and then around 5000 miles. Whidehide, Now that you have shaken my brain a little, I do remember the carb drain and the screw that will drain the carb bowel. ( this might be the problem ) I'll check it. Thanks ! Actually, I think that I will do a complete PDI and then go from there. Might as well as long as I'm going to have the plastics off. Thanks for all the help.

Scooter is naked !!!!!!!! What I need to know is, Which way do I turn the crank shaft nut to put the valves where they line up with the mark through the hole above the dip stick??? righty tighty or lefty loosey? Got-er done thanks to the Doc JR. The valves were tight. I mean couldn't even begin to put the feeler gauge .004 in the intake or the .006 in the exhaust. I had to back out the exhaust quite a bit.. It's dark, so I had to put the tools and the big parts in the garage for a couple of days until I can get back to it. I did notice that there was air in the fuel filter. Is this normal?

Here's the scoop on the scoot. Found the gas problem. Screw was loose on the carb drain. Screwed it back in and put some fingernail polish on the threads so it won't back out again. Adjusted the valves. Not fun but got-er done. Started up the scoot and herd a lot of tapping. Re-adjusted the valves, started her back up and she quieted down. When I started the scoot up , I still had to pump the throttle to get her to start. Now I did say that I had a new carb to replace the original carb. But lets try 1 more thing before I have to go to all that trouble. I removed the new enricher from the new carb and installed it in the the old carb. Time to start the scoot. First hit of the starter and she started. Wa-LA. Now I just got home from work and the temperature is in the 50's and I'm going to go out and try to start the scoot. Be right back.... STARTED, First kick. Thanks for all the help. Plastics go on in the morning.
