Horse POWER

I have been reading and looking on these forums trying to figure out how "some" guy(s) took a 150cc and made a 16 horsepower engine out of it and made it reliable. What is the horsepower on a 200cc? Or a 250cc. Then tell me if it will bolt into a 157QMJ engine slot and work with the original cvt or a different cvt for the extra power and performance??? How do I get 16 horses pushing/pulling my little trike? I really want to know. Sounds like a fairytale to me or is it possible? Attachments:

Most manufacturers claim about 8HP for a 150cc. I think these guys claiming 16HP are stretching reality. Anyway, how do they know? Do they have access to a dyno? I really doubt it. The 200cc that keeps popping up is actually a 176cc BMS. Here's that page of their website. At the top you'll notice it says 200cc/150cc and then right below that it suddenly transforms into a 176cc! Click on it a couple times, it'll keep expanding.
They rate their 176cc at 10HP which I think is pretty close. So let's say you have that engine in your Trike. You juice it up 25% somehow, which is a helluva gain, and now you've got 12.5HP. You'd notice a difference but it certainly wouldn't burn up the rear tires. Performance CVTs aren't aimed at handling extra HP, they help you with a hole shot or more top end. So, in my opinion, getting 16HP out of a 150cc is a big stretch. Most 250cc scooter engines are about 15HP but they won't plop into your trike, they're not a GY6. You could probably get a few more HP out of your 150cc but if you want a big change in performance you should probably trade in for a 250. JMO Rich

I agree with Rich. Doubling the horsepower on a GY6 engine is a far stretch and would be expensive. The GY6 engine is old technology and a lot of manufacturers are using more modern designs like 4 valve heads, much higher compression, fuel injection, etc. The newer engines are also designed to handle the extra horsepower (better internal components, better cooling). Anyone pulling 16 hp from a GY6 150cc would have to deal with cooling problems and early bearing failure. This would not be a choice for a street scoot.

I ran into this while I was looking for something this morning. This is a 250cc Helix clone shoehorned into a 150cc scooter. A guy with the handle Zug Zug had it for a while and it was nothing but trouble. He ended up selling it because it was such a PITA mechanically. The engine didn't just drop into the bike, there was extensive adaptions to make it fit. It was an interesting concept and the thread was one of the most popular we ever had. Unfortunately Zug Zug moved on and took his images with him so I had to delete the thread. Rich

I'm not sure what happened to my pics. Most of them in my online album are missing and almost all of them on my comp. Probably the Ex sabotaging things before I moved out. The main issue with this scoot ended up being the corrosion to the cooling system by the coolant that sat in it for 4+yrs. I still think the design is ok but I think the coolant that was put in it from china was not the type for aluminum and messed up the sensors and pump.

Yeah it was a cool lil 250. I still got over 600 miles on it before it started having problems. I had a decent riding year this year overall. I think it was 636 on the 250, 3500 on the rivi and about 2500 on the vlx. Hey thats over 6.5k for the year. Not any kind of record but any year that Im over 5k is a good year of riding. I think this coming year I'm gonna shoot for at least 5k on one 150cc scoot. Maybe ill start a thread and let you guys help me decide on which one to get with my tax return.

Hey Andrew - glad to hear from ya! Happy Holidays!
On the issue of horse power - I've seen that most of the China 250's claim about 16-17 HP. The Xpeed 250/MS3-250 is rated at 24.7 but like Cruiser noted, it's quad valve, DOHC and fuel injected. A lot of China 250 riders don't believe the claimed 24.7 hp.
