I Just got my new UNI and was wondering if WD40 is good enough to use as a foam air filter oil? My last filter was the cheapo Scrappydog pod filter and fell apart on me and never oiled. (The foam separated from the rubber mount) I know the oil is used to filter out the dust and I live in a desert. So will any type of oil do the trick? Motor oil, WD40, Silicone spray? I just don't wanna fork over another 10$ for filter oil if I can use something around the house. Thanks for any thoughts or tips!!!! BTW, Is it better to oil the foam or the prefilter? Or Both?

The other stuff just doesnt work. You need the filter oil. I prefer the kind you soak the filter with and then squeeze it out and let it dry, but there is a spray on type too.
Some like to oil both filters but I dont oil a prefilter. To me the prefilter is for the big stuff.

I tried several things and found that the Uni oil works best. It is formulated for the foam and better than anything I tried.

Thanks for the replies guys!!! So I need filter oil . OK what about K&N filter oil? Good/Bad, Ok to use on a foam? Should I just order some UNI spray online or can I buy some at an autoparts store? Update--- Made a trip to Auto zone and picked up a K&N kit (Oil and cleaner) and, A Schumacher battery charger for 27 $ Seemed like a good deal to me ;D Thanks again for the tips. If I went ahead and used what I had around the house I would not have got a deal on the charger

No you need UNI or Motul oil. It is stickier than the K&N.
You could probably get by with K&N but you may need to keep redoing it...

I know K&N is for paper not foam filters but, I have been told it works just the same even if I have to clean and oil more frequently. It has to be better than none at all

Bong, It works just fine, I personnally do not like Uni Filters because you really have to soak them with oil to be effective and its messy. Just think about why do they recommend you need to soak the Foam so much. That is because it is very Porous and that is the only way it will stop dust from getting in. How many cars do you see with Foam Filters, not many, most use paper filters AND no oils. The other thing the oil also restricts the air as well, then they sell you a SOCK now come on what the hey. You bought it to Un-Restrict the Air and now they are selling more things to put on the filter, beside the oil. Some will tell you UNIs are the best others will tell you K&Ns are the best, they all work and do a good job. It is just that someone years ago bought one of them and they said it was the greatest thing since slice bread. Word gets around and whatever they heard that is what they also believe even though they have never tried anything else. my .02 Alleyoop

I agree with OOP... talk about a mess!! and the sticky oil still runs all over the top of the engine when you park in the sun on a hot day.
Also on my Lifan that had a foam filter stock, the UNI made it run like a bag of bolts. Everything was worse... spent a month adjusting things and it never did run right.
Put my stock foam filter back on and it runs perfectly... I found the UNI made a hell of a noise and the whole carb moved when I twisted the throttle, no matter how tight the clamp was on the intake elbow...
Chinese engineers are not stupid.. sometimes they design things to run very well...stock.

I would like to think no engineer is stupid no matter what country. Some are just cheaper It takes a lot of thought to make a product that works at half the price Why tinker at all if it works? like I originally posted the Uni is replacing my previous pod filter. My little 50cc likes more air than the stock airbox could provide even with mods. I have tried paper and foam but, my particular engine seems to get better acceleration and about 3-4 mph more top speed with a foam type filter. Experimenting with what works is part of the scooter ownership fun IMO!!! As Alleyoop stated - some like Uni, Some like K&N. I will add that some will never even check the stock filter and ask questions later Plus, an UNI comes with stickers!! When applied an extra 1-2 mph is almost guaranteed

Stickers...gotta like that... K&N has stickers too in Canada...
Talk about a speed improvement! Must be something to do with sticker shock ;-)
