Ok here we go first of i know im a little crazy........ But me and my bro are thinking of taking a journey from Indiana to North Carolina on our 50 cc scoots. We have a route planned. I was just wondering if anyone knows if it will be ok to ride on US highways? Cause in IN u cannot ride on Interstates unless 150cc and over. The route includes going through Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Then NC. Does anyone out there know what the laws are and if we are not going to get in trouble for this.

So far as I know you can not ride 50cc scoots or bikes on any Interstate any where in the country. You could ride 150ccs on the Interstate but only if you have a death wish. It is legal. It sounds like an interesting ride but map it for the back roads only.

Here's what Massachusetts says about mopeds and bikes on highways: "Motorized bicycles may be operated on all public ways (except limited access or express state highways where signs prohibiting bicycles have been posted)." This is part of the registration form for 50cc and below and motorized bikes.

Yes, with 50cc scoots you should not be on roads that the speed limit is posted even at 45mph or greater period. You know if the speed limit is posted 45 they are doing 50-60mph. Alleyoop

i did a long trip with my 50cc back in the days with my cousin, what i did was,i instaled a 12v high speed fan(kinda like the computer exhaust fan,but rated 12volts) directed towards the engine block, my trip went out smoothly., your main concern will be overheating... well with 50cc, you have to tackle mostly backroads... 50cc in interstate? sish forget it! whatever you plan to do we'll support you all the way! good luck!

Alleyoop Alley, I'm kinda surprised by that. Are you saying that if you live in the country and own a 50cc you shouldn't be on the road? I road my 50 for years and I lived 13 miles from the city where I went to school. Only time I had a hard time was on the real twisty back roads of Maryland where the speed limit was 30mph. Cagers wanted to pass me on blind curves. I'd flag them back until I could safely pull over enough to let them by. Other than that I had no problems with roads of 40-50 mph limits. M/C

im pretty certain you can ride on any road that is not an interstate. basically any road that has exits is going to be off limits. just plan your route using the "avoid highways" function. where in NC are you going? you are welcome to stop here and camp (im assuming you are camping on the way)

On the practical side, those 50's are going to have some problems pulling the hills if you're going through the Appalachians.

I have a Tomos Revival modded to 70cc and I live in the NGA mountains. The prof is correct, assuming you ae riding a moped and not a scooter. The 50cc scoots do a fair job of handling the mountains but in WNC you are going to hit some serious grades which equals slow going.
