Poster earler about the new Scooter laws, here are the results of making my 49cc legal to ride roads with speed limits above 35, no interstate allowed. At Motor vehicles, three clerks put heads togethor to figure what to do, (three reads of the new law). Decision was tag as motorcycle, (no scooter tags here). Response to question if inspection was necessary was call State Police. Called three scooter dealers while clerks were discussing , response from all three, Moped/scooters 49Cc do not need tags & inspection. I will wait a few days and go to inspections since it is last day of month. Insurance for year $75.00, Registration & tags $ 40.00. Inspection probably 18.00. Total costs $ 133.00. Fine for riding on roads posted restricting scooter/mopeds, if I did not do this, $250.00 for uninsured vehicle on public byway, Non registered vehicle $125.00. Speeding ticket for over 30 MPH $150 if a strict Cop .Time in court ?, court costs at leat 67.50. Total fines would be over 500 bucks and how many points? Price to be safe $133.00. Wow I just saved enough to mod & rod it enough to get a speeding ticket for over 55 MPH!! rofl

Question is define exactly were a scooter can ride and can not ride. My understanding is that as long as its a 2 lane road a scooter can ride but if there is a median you can not. Question of the speed a scooter can not exceed over 35 but everyone reads the law different. That is also the helmet law well I'm not going into that one lmao

Posted over 35 MPH: Must be tagged as a motorcycle, PERIOD. 2. If eqipped with speedometer displaying in excess of 30 mph must be tagged motorcycle. ( Clerks at DMV disagreed on what this meant). 3. If over 49 CC=motorcycle

89newbie, if every one, scooters of all sizes, bikes, cars, and trucks owners all carried their share of insurance your $75 insurance for a year would be about 1/2 of that. The uninsured and underinsured coverage amounts to about 1/2 of your bill. I signed a waver and removed that coverage from my 2 small scooters and they run about $35 ea. ( last year I may have rode 20 miles between both) I believe there is an under the table agreement between the insurance industry and law makers to allow a percentage to ride with no insurance in order to justify charging all for the extra coverage. I think around here the fine is only around $100 and cheaper than insuring a junk car for the min period. john

Round these parts people get insurance, then cancel it as soon as they get the card. It sucks hugely especially for us poor sods who pay for it. Mines 100 a year, I don't mind paying it, thats a fair amount and would most likely be cheaper if everyone bought it. <50cc scoots dont need plates or insurance here, in theory to make it cheaper for people to use them. They can also ride on the hard shoulder (and are encouraged to do so). tbh I dont agree with the lack of plates and insurance, the former makes it far harder to deal with examples of poor / dangerous riding. The latter, considering how cheap insurance actually is for little scoots is just wrong. If you cannot afford 10 bucks a month for insurance take the bus. It's not like insuring an aston martin, we aren't talking silly money.

Thats for the absolute basic coverage, no comprehensive coverage or theft protection. I just checked and for a 250 (around 5k value) with a modest deduction comprehensive coverage with theft coverage runs 350 ish, 450 for a 400cc bike.
