In that article they were calling it transmission fluid and gear oil both. 80W90 as mentioned in the article is clearly old style plain jane gear oil, suitable for old style manual trans and automobile differentials that were not limited slip. I think their point is use gear oil and not automatic transmission fluid. Any kind of gear oil should be fine. You have a fine looking scooter, if I may say so.

Hey Strait, Sorry for your loss but, Congrats on the new ride!!!!! I did not read the whole thread but this is my opinion. Here in Vegas the temp is hotter than hell and I use Shell Rotella 15w40 engine oil. No problems at all around 115 degrees daily. I have a small leak but, that's another issue. To answer your original question- Change the oil around 500 to 1000 miles religiously!!!! make sure the valves are adjusted around every 1000 miles too. If you don't, You'll buy another scoot in 6 months. You already did that so, lets make this one last a bit longer Just change the oil regularly!!! I don't think it really matters what kind you prefer just so long as it's done regularly, If it gets hard to start adjust the valves, and make sure the battery is charged. This is all regular maintenance like brushing your teeth or taking a shower. Would you wanna start and go for a ride if ya didn't shower or brush last month??? Just sayin It's the little things that make you live longer and stay beautiful IMO. Same goes for a scoot ;D Take care of yourself and that scoot!!!!!

If you have a mechanical bone in your body you can tear down a carb, the main thing is not to go too crazy by unscrewing everything if you dont need too, personally i would use synthetic gear case oil as it lasts a lot longer than reg gear oil, same with the reg oil

Most people like to break in the scoot with dino oil and wait until 1000 miles or more before going to synthetic. I change mine about every 1000 miles so I just keep using dino oil in it. It's cheap and it it gets replaced frequently so I don't see the need for synthetic. I do however use synthetic for the gear lube so I don't have to change it as often. Gear lube won't get as dirty as fast as engine oil so I feel I could leave it in there longer. So far though, I've been changing the gear lube at each oil change just because it's easy and takes so little fluid. Well I have 5k miles on it now and will change the fluids again this weekend but after that I think I'll just do the gear lube maybe every third oil change.
I use Castrol 4-T 10w40 dino oil in the crankcase and Mobil 1 75-90 synthetic in the gearcase.
Like the new scoot.... it's looks so... new :-)`

I think one theory (that I subscribe to ) is dino oil is fine because you don't need long lasting oil because it's beneficial to change it often to let the smaller metal particles out that aren't caught by the strainer. If you have a liquid cooled scooter with a real filter, I think you could use the same oil change intervals as a car.

Ok, my scooter has 68 miles on it and I just refilled the gas for the first time so I decided to also check the tire and and oil while I was at the gas station. Tires were fine, oil seemed low and I didn't want to just add oil to it, not knowing what it came with, so I did my first oil chage w/ 10w/30 regular oil. I asked a bunch of scooter shops in the area (since they are used to the weather here in Miami) and they all said use reg 10w/30 oil for the engine. The oil change went fine other than it was a bitch to get the cap back on ( line up the threads ) with the spring working against me but I made it happen. Then I filled it up a little too much ( I was checking along the way too ) and the last thing I wanted to do was take that cap back off so I siphoned the oil back out where the dip stick goes with a straw and my thumb It worked well, took a while of checking and redoing it but all is well. There were no little metal shards in the filter and just because I already did the oil change at only 68 miles I think I'm going to do my next one after another 150miles so it has more time to break in. After that I'm going to do it every 621 miles ( strange # right) well the manual says every 1000km so here in America, that means every 621 mile LOL. I don't know why they can't put the type of engine and gear oil to use in the manual, just how often to do stuff. It says next at 186 miles to replace gear oil, check/clean spark plug and clean carb, but nothing about adjusting the valves or brakes as I have heard to do pretty early on, are these 2 items really necessary? Is it hard to do. I'm still shaky w doing my own things but I want to learn So far I've only replaced engine oil and a battery and a fuse on a scooter before robb its air cooled 4 stroke it has the little strainer looking reusable oil filter

Yup. I had to get creative. I was NOT going through trying to get the cap back on again.
