Got a oil leak ,think its coming from head gasket.manual says to torque head bolts to 15ft.lbs. does this sound right? doesn't seem like enough to me. Any body know if this is correct?

Hey scootmonk, my 1st GY6 scoot had an oil leak at about 1500 mi., I thought it might be head gasket, so removed valve cover and checked the torque on the head bolts - around 15 ftlbs - I was a little leery about over tightening anything on the Chinese metal, so left them at that, checked the valve clearance and then noticed the valve cover gasket was pretty smashed and one small crack in it - so replaced it, put it all back together and no leak. This was my 1st bit of wrenching in 35 years!

Can you get us a pic Scootmonk? Sometimes nomenclature is a problem. The gasket on the aluminum cover that you take off to adjust the valves is the valve cover gasket. The gasket lower down that seals the head to the cylinder is the head gasket, a much bigger problem. You can e-mail a pic to my hotmail account, just click on my handle name, and I'll upload to photobucket. Rich

Make sure its an actual leak before you start taking things apart. The first week or so after I got the scoot I thought I had a oil leak. I cleaned everything off and couldnt find it. Then the 2nd time I spilled a lil fuel when filling up it showed up again. I have the fuel tank in the floorboard and when I spilled a bit it would blow back on the engine and cvt cover and road grime would stick to everything. -Zug

Did you ever find your leak? If the cooling air is blowing it around it could be coming from anywhere behind the exhaust vent. Rich

Could be a small crack in the head - very hard to spot, but 90% of these cracks happen near the cam chain area - must be a weak point in the casting. We have been getting new heads w/ valves installed $49. from Buggy parts NW - they seem to be holding up better than OEM heads. Have replaced about 12 to 15 heads on the GY6 this last year. It seems that if it's not the valve cover gasket, not the starter motor O ring, the next place is the head - usually a small hairline crack near the cam chain area...

Nope, in fact now you gotta give us some pics, if you need some help let me know. I have a Vulcan 1500 Classic FI and talk about it all the time. We're a scooter owner's forum, the owners happen to have other interests too...........like Dr. JR's garden . Rich
