Oil leak

I have been battling an oil leak for weeks. I have tried different gasket material before going with an o-ring (2-159) for the valve cover. Prior to the o-ring installation I had a stock seal which appeared to seal well. I removed the plastic shrouding and fired up the scoot. I noticed oil at the bottom area of the cylinder head on the cam side. Wiped down the head and right before my eyes I noticed what looked like a dark hair appear. A hair line crack in the head. Just like what ootscoot said, a hairline crack in the cam chain well. I have another scooter that is inoperable. I took the head off it. There appears to be a crack inside the cam well on this one too. I changed it out anyway. I will see how long I can go on this one. Maybe it is time to go aftermarket big bore kit. I hope the heads are better constructed.

I have 2 Chinese Znen scooters. One is a no name import and the other is a savaged Lance that I use for parts. Hence, the extra cylinder head. It seems like that this crack is common. I have read about this on other boards as well. When I look inside the cam well, there looks to be a crack that may be related to the mounting location of the lower 8mm bolt.

I don't see why not, it's not like it's under a tremendous amount of pressure, just oil splash. Check the picture section Scootmonk. Rich

Yep - thanks for the pics - that's the spot...we have been replacing the heads w/ new ones from Buggy parts NW - come w/ the valves installed, $49. They seem to be holding up much better than OEM.

hey ootscoot, was sanding some jbweld off head where i thought it was leaking. the vibration from the multitool must have opened it up. could not see crack before, now you can see it real well. it's right where you said it would be. thanks for sharing the knowledge. going to try to jbweld it. hate to take this motor apart, it realy starts and runs well. thanks again.
