A question about this nomenclature and engine type/size. I have a MC 54 250B and know what type of engine it has. I see many posts about the names of these scoots and what is in them and I don't really believe what I read. So in this post I am going to show and ask. I hope I am not offending anyone as I just want some clarity in what we have and what we say. First off I will use the Rocketa catalog for scooter types and the parts and names in the Rocketa parts manuals. Lets start with MC-54-250 (LJ4, L8Y) on my scoot it says MC-54-250B on the rear plastic panel and the identification papers, the certificate of origin. Now we look into the parts manual. www.roketa.com/product/2610/0/2658.shtml For the scooter www.roketa.com/product/parts_detail.jsp?partId=33096&partName=ENGINE%20ASSEMBLY%283%29The engine assembly. Shows the engine to be a verticle type. We are looking at the top of the engine. A vertical engine, the Honda clone. Next we will look at the following machine MC-54B-250 (5RY) www.roketa.com/product/2610/0/27312.shtml For the scooter. www.roketa.com/product/parts_detail.jsp?partId=30732&partName=ENGINE%20ASSEMBLY%283%29The engine assembly. Look to the orientation of the cylinder. We are looking at the horizontal engine. The Linhai clone. So with all this I think the definition is in the 54 part of the machine name. The 54 by itself is Honda clone engine and 54B is the Linhai clone engine. I have not yet found out what the B after 250 means but sure it has nothing to do with the engine type. OK, now I am ready for acceptance or challenge. I might need to learn something I don't understand so far.

from what I have seen, the are no hard fast rules for what you will find in or on a chinese scooter. they seem to contain what ever parts the assembler/manufacturer happens to have laying around at the time. i believe it could be possible to order 2 identical scooters in different colors and get a linhai in one and a honda clone in the other.

Well I agree with your last statement. It is up to the buyer and seller to make that clear before transferring the money. I did not and ended up with the scoot I have which has a Honda clone engine. Had I made the seller tell me year of build and details on the motor I would likely not have ordered what I got. Since last February when I got my scoot I have learned a lot. Rather like what I have now.
But if I ever order again I will be a lot more careful with what I and the seller agree upon. That is part of the reason for my post. Had I been more alert I would have ordered the one with the Linhai clone and insisted on a much newer year of build. My 2008 build may have been sitting in a warehouse for over 3 years. Not the best thing in my opinion.
I should have ordered a specific model, not just the one with the best sale offer. They all look alike don't they? But the age and engines are different and I think the model numbers do make a difference.

the biggest problem is most of the sellers are drop shippers. that said they have no idea what the warehouse has sitting on the dock ready to ship next. it would be fair to guess that the seller has never ridden one nor has a motorcycle endorsment so he could legally try one out and see what is good and what is likely to draw complaints from customers. one tip off is when you have to call them or email them the vin number of what was just delivered to you in order to get the MSO so you can register it. (the paper work is with the shipper not the seller)
I will never put up with that scenario again. i got hit with it twice, once on a car and once on a scooter. took 30 days for the car title cause the dealer didn't pay off the old loan and 2 weeks for the scooter mso. when i pay for a vehicle the paper work is part of what i paid for and i want it with the vehicle so i can be legal.
