On most scooters you don't screw it in to check the oil but there are exceptions. One way to tell for sure is to drain the oil and fill it back up with the amount your manual says it holds. Then check it and you'll know where it's supposed to be on the dipstick. Rich

It is not complicated, you can do it either way.
If you DO NOT SCREW it in the OIL LEVEL should be HALF WAY UP THE XXXXXXXs on the Dip Stick. If you SCREW it in the OIL LEVE should cover ALL of the XXXXXXXs. Alleyoop

i drained the oil that was in the crank case only and i measured it on last oil change it showed 45 oz so i measured 45 oz and put new oil back in and with the dip stick screwed in all the way,,, when i take it out it shows at the top of the xxxxx on the dip stick but is that the correct level it needs to be??? on my jcl the rear end lable calls for 20 wt oil and i found out that i neeced 80w90 so that is what i put in .. the lable on the motor shows .08 L tried that the very first time and the stick level was way off,, don't remember how much that is way i measured the amount 45oz i know that i am close , but am i over or under depending on the way i insert the stick

Well here is the problem with draining the oil and going by what comes out. Even when you drain it there is always some oil maybe in the valve cover in the bearings etc.. Also many times you will also get some gas down into the crankcase which will add more to the volume. Then on the other side of the deal it could be burning a little oil and decrease the amount of oil in the crankcase. Another is it may spit out some oil out the Valve cover vent tube. So what I do is drain the oil hit the KILL SWITCH and hit the starter a couple of time and more oil comes out. Then I get a quart of oil and pour put in littl more than 3/4 of the quart start the motor and let it run for a few seconds to get the oil moving. I then check it again with the dipstick I use the NOT SCREW it in method and pour until half the xxxxxs are coverd. If you use the screw in method it will cover the xxxxxxs but you could have overfilled it past the xxxxxs. Alleyoop

Believe me it does not have to be very precise. alleyoop's first answer was right on. That drip is just oil running out of all sorts of places. If I tip my drain pan over it will drip for half a day or more. Oil sticks to things.
