Great question, I get that a lot. Proboards makes their money from Google ads that appear at the top and bottom of the forum. We pay them per number of page hits to keep them away for members. You'll see the ads if you log out or before you sign in, they're pretty obnoxious. The ad free supporters donate into a fund that I use to pay Proboards, you'll see a thumbs up icon next to each supporter. Members can also donate into the fund by clicking on "click here to make this board ad free" at the bottom of the main page. Even a donation of $7.00 helps out a lot and buys us 50,000 page hits.
