I would like to know if anyone has any experience or ideas about what could be preventing the tail light from coming on while still letting the break light function as it should.
I have tried to trace the wires, but gaining access to them is not the easiest thing to do. I noticed what looks like a very thin, possibly clear plastic coated wire that appears to come from the rear light wires. It seems to me to go laterally to the left (driver's) and disappears as it wraps under the metal that the light assembly seems to be attached to. I have noticed that the wire is broken before it wraps under the metal piece. Is it possible that this is a ground wire? Would it prevent the light from working - if it is what I think it is?
I have looked at the wiring diagrams available on line, and no where do I see anything like this very thin wire.
Thanks

From how you describe it going under a metal piece it sure is a ground wire. Alleyoop

Try connecting it to the metal plate...the lights will either work or you will blow a fuse...

Try connecting it to the metal plate...the lights will either work or you will blow a fuse... Nice Sprocket, are you still doing marriage counseling on the side? There's one ground wire for the bulb so if that was the problem they would both be nonfunctional. Did you pull the bulb and inspect the filaments? There's two. If the bulb is good it's the supply to the tail light and yes, those wires are kinda hinky to get at. Here is a turn signal troubleshooting PDF created by our good buddy Shalom72c. Rich

Sorry I didn't read that your brake light was working... so Rich is absolutely right.. it isn't a ground problem...

Most ground wires on scooters are solid green and sometimes they are also solid black.. like the wire that runs from the negative battery post to the frame...

Thanks everyone.
No worries here, no crying either.
I am still messing around with this project. What I really was (still am) trying to do is hook up some additional lights to the scooter. I figured that while I was at it, I would try to fix this tail light situation that my repair shop keeps telling me would be too expensive for them to trace the wires and such. (Now I understand that statement) Instead what they do is put in a new bulb. Go figure.
The nice thing is, I am beginning to think that there are many things on this scooter that I could probably fix myself or with a little help from my hubby.
Thanks again, I will make sure to post the outcome.
