the regulator is a good distance away from anything hot... any idea as to what else may be causing this?

It is either going bad, or could be bad ground wires from the stator or from the regulator itself so check your ground wires. Bad grounds will cause things to heat up. How is it charging is it chargeing good or is it acting up. When you rev it up around 3000 is the battery reading over 13 volts? Alleyoop

If the stator is smoking it has a short or possibly a short in the regulator...

Check your voltage at the battery with some RPMs. If it's 15 or higher it's definitely a bad regulator. Also, the yellow wire should be 12v AC or a little higher, no more. The regulator gets hot trying to burn off excess voltage from letting the voltage go too high. Rich
