Yes all that you said happens can be caused by the Valves being to tight. Adjust them to TOP INTAKE Valve .004inchs and BOTTOM EXHAUST to .005inches. Right now it is running LEAN if it is backfireing. So after you adjust the Valves it still backfireing then you have an AIR LEAK somewhere and it is sucking in to much air.
SO ADJUST the Valves and then tell us how it is running. Alleyoop

Alley: With such few miles on this guys trike there is no reason that stator should be burnt up...do you agree?? I would be very concerned about the electrical "regulation". I can certainly understand that if the stator is malfunctioning because of burnt wires it would cause engine reliability problems. What I don't understand (short of a factory defect in the stator) why the stator would burn up this quickly in the life of this particular scooter. It appears this particular stator was poorly made and with little or no quality control of it? A new one might fix the problem but I believe after a new one is added I would do a voltage check to see what it is putting to the battery and what it is absorbing. vr, Lee

Lee, Well that tells the story why it happened it got wet and shorted out and some of the coils got hit. Water usually causes trouble with these scoots and shorts out things. Mikes trike got rained on and it was his KEY switch that got all wet and it would not start, it was deader than a door nail. He had to dry it off and spray it with some stuff, and it started right up. I don't know what you could do to protect the stator from water. Alleyoop

I would suspect more that water pooled on curcuit boards or in connectors than got into the stator, but again that is not so impossible either. It is definitly the result of shorting out though. A trash bag even if it's just over the handle bars where the majority if the electrical is when every there's even a hint of rain may have saved the day.

Yep, you can get a cheap cover just as long as its waterprove throw that sucker on when your parking it for the night or day or when it looks like rain. Pretty cheap investment and saves you money, headaches, wrenching and you keep on riding. Alleyoop

I hate them water probems. Mike was not the key and switch it was the connectors to the switch, water from the V section over the front drip down and you all know how the connectors are..next to nothing really. Had to clean and spray and wrap.

This is all good to know. I don't drive the Magnum 300 or my CB 900 when it looks like rain (to old for that kind of fun). I think I told you guys about my digital volt meter I permanently mounted...probably in the "other forum" though. Anyway it provides me with a very good analysis of what is happening on the charging side of my system. I can switch it on before I ever fire up the scoot and it tells me the health of the battery before I crank it up. It's so reliable I know when I should put a slow charge on it long before I'm going for a ride. While I'm riding it shows about 14 volts of current going to the battery from the stator. It's comforting more than anything. ALLEY: My Honda 900 has a sealed stator...I haven't really looked at our scooters. No way to seal it?
