www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=50015Salsbury powered by Kawasaki. It was a bike in disguise. I'm thinking that the 2014 winner will be riding an Aprilia Mana, Honda DN-01 or new Honda Integra. Oh, what the heck. A Gold Wing looks like a giant scooter to me. Let's have them in too. Edit: I'm not knocking scooters here. I thought the rules for this event was for scooters with engines under 250cc. If the scooter world keeps going with things like the new BMW 650, Honda Integra and who knows what else, they might as well make it open to motorcycles too. People on real scooters won't be able to compete with one-off wonders and Blitzkrieging Super scoots from the Fatherland.

the rules allow it since you only have to meet one of the criteria which was a step thru frame

I love it, a scooter has a step thru frame and seems most in the canon ball did not have a step thru. Well kind of a step thru for the majesty and burgmans. That Salsbury is more of a scooter than a burgman or majesty for sure....flat floor board. john

More like a two wheeled Formula One car.

Looks to be dual carbs on it. I read the 7 page forum and it was with in the rules and all in the race had two years to do the same, yet Lee was the only one who did like he said he was going to do. One thing he did have special was he built a 7 gal gas tank....No stopping for gas during the day. And only got arrested once. There were big fuel injected scooters in the race that he beat but it doesn't appear that they did any thing about the gas tanks. He did put cruise control on it too. When he started the race his scooter had 51 miles on it so it was virtually untested.

OK, but is a flat floorboard going to be the sole criteria defining a scooter? Does that make all the scooters that don't have one a motorcycle? The Yamaha T-Max and even a CF Moto Jewel don't have flat floorboards. No, I have to differ. There's a reason NASCAR has strict rules. If the Cannonball organizers don't do some better defining then the next run will be an even bigger farce. Guys will be building home built specials with KZ1400 or six cylinder Gold Wing engines and 10 gallon tanks, with flat floorboards of course, and the poor fools with cheap $7000 Vespas or $10,000 BMWs and 650 Burgmans will be left in the dust.
I wonder what the guy with the second place Allstate had under the hood? A measly 250 Ninja motor?

There where 4 or 5 things in the rules that they felt defined a scooter having a step thru frame was just one of them. I don't see an issue with him building this franken scooter since the ride is for charity and it falls in the rules. The people who run the cannball knew all along that he was building it and they had no problem with it.

IMO and only IMO. There should be a separate class for custom machines. I give the person a lot of credit for building it as his skills far exceed mine but even for charity fair classes and rules should be established. The Lake Erie Loop Run is done with different classes and even different rules in the same class. One set for newer bikes and another for old bikes to even the playing field. It is also done for charity (children who suffer bad burns) and it gives people like you and me a chance if we were to run. I watched a Video of someone who morphed a 600cc 4 cylinder sport bike engine between the rider and the steering head. Very well done. But who wants to ride a scooter 130 mph?

Bashan, those pictures took me way back to my high school days. My neighbor and friend had one of those orange Salsbury machines during his high school days. Always thought them to be so much better looking than the Cushman's, and quieter too. Is Orange the only color they made? I had a Whizzer at that time. Lots of fun in my high school days and you just took me back.
There was another powered source for bicycles called the Marmon Twin. A 2 cyl, 2 cycle, frame mounted motor. Looked at them but never bought any. One of my friends had one and it was a bit smokey. .

I think all the Salsbury's are orange but I'm not completely sure. Take a look at this thread in the museum. Rich
