My 150cc motor started burning oil then started to really run bad. The plug is totally soaked in oil and there are metal shards in the oil.

I am thinking its just the rings?

Do you think I could just buy new rings/piston and install them?

Do I need to do any machining if it is just the rings?

The metal shards in the oil troubles me . There could be much more hidden damage inside the engine. Those shards can damage bearings and the crankshaft and the other parts within the crankcase . You may need to do a full engine disasembly to see if any of the other engine parts have been affected by the metal in the oil.

Difficult to know really without pulling the top end off, although the metal shards don`t sound too good. If rings wear out it`s normally a gradual process which doesn`t leave shards or any noticeable size fragments. You might`ve broke a ring in which case there may be damage to the bore which would require a replacement or rebore. There is of course a worse case scenario where the shards are a sign of damage to the bottom end.
Ideally pull the top end and check for damage, when thats off you`ll have a chance to also check the crank for free movement and/or excessive play.

John, it's gonna be a while before I can get the time to open it up.

Ill et you know when I do, and I am sure I will need soe help from you guys
