:-/I have a 2008 Chuanl Protege 150 cc GY6 with 16" wheels and just went over 2000 mi. in the year and a half since I bought it new. What I need to know is should I be useing it like a touring bike. I added my own homemade trunk and saddle bags, and have loaded them and then strapped on my backpack and sleeping bag and then headed up into the High Uinta mountains of Utah. On level I am easily able to maintain 45 to 50 mph cruising even getting upto 55 sometimes but the upgrades bog me down to 35 to 40 and sometimes 25 mph. Am I damaging the motor by keeping wot on these long climbs?

It is my opinion that running just about any motor at wide open throttle for extended periods is abuse and will end its life shortly. I do run my 150 WOT for periods of about 2 min. There are a few exceptions especially 2 stroke engines as in outboard motors, chain saws, weed wackers and other motors of that type. Even race cars that run wot don't last, a nascar racer after a 500 mile race is pretty much done and gets an over haul or replaced. john

It all depends on your RPMS what are the RPMS when your running it at WOT? That is what is important, if the RPMS are high 8000+ then yes you are shortening the life of the motor. Alleyoop

Thanks for answering so soon guys. Sorry Alley, but I don't know the rpm's. No tach on this machine. Looks like I should probably upgrade to a 250cc for this kind of trip. Been looking at a Roketta 54 or maybe 79. Too bad because I really like my 150. I got 65 to 72 mpg on my last trip even in the mountains.

Forgot to say it was a great trip. Camped at 10,000 feet between Tial lake and Mirror lake on hiway 150. Cost only $11.00 for gas round trip from Salt Lake City.
