I had a new 150cc engine and muffler installed about two months ago at a scooter retail shop. Recently the engine blew and started leaking oil. I took it back to the shop and the owner tells me that because of the muffler being cracked it cause the engine, i.e. pistons...etc to blow. Any mechanics out there, please help me with an professional opinion.

If it was leaking so bad and backfireing it will burn and can cause to drop a valve and wipe out the piston. Also on a new engine it also depends on how the rider was using running the new motor. Since it was only two months you should have heard the muffler and or header pipe leaking they do make a racket. You should have taken it right back right away after all a shop installed the motor and muffler. Alleyoop

Sorry to hear about your problems...the engine is done. I don't think the shop is responsible, but maybe you can cut a deal on a new one...

Time to learn how to install a new top end. Piston, rings, cyl., and new head complete with valves. If you put your city or town in you might find some one close to give you some hands on help too. Might not hurt to mention more about what they did too as in a brand new engine or did they rebuild existing engine? A lot of folks say they have a new engine where they really had the old one repaired. An engine does have to have the jets in carb matched with the muffler especially if it was a preformance one. Right now all we know is your engine is "broke". Tell us more.

i am NOT a mech BUT ive learned a few things
yes if u have a bad muffler, different things could've happened. it wasn't letting out all the burnt exhaust and it has to go somewhere, so it went back into the engine which will burn ur engine out. when i first got "chrissy" i could hear her muffler was bad so rather than burn out the engine, i got another stock muffler id rather pay the $50 for it and not ride for a week{ till it got here} than burn out the engine
if u decide to do a top end job urself, theres tons of videos on youtube to help ya.
sorry u had probs
