I purchased this scooter last year but I haven't been able to ride it much. I'm now able to ride it more but I find the manual that came with it hard to understand. Does anyone know if the tank to the left of the gas cap is for antifreeze or water? If it's for water, should it be full? Where can I find a good manual with descriptive information?

The cap near the gas tank is the antifreeze overflow cap. You need to life up the seat and under the plastic is the area where you poor the antifreeze. The whole bottom plastic should lift up its not where the battery is underneath that plastic.

The radiator cap can be found next to the battery under the plastic cover. The white plastic tank next to the gas cap is the overflow tank and it should be full. Add coolant where the radiator cap is.

If you look into the overflow tank it should not be full. If you see coolant when looking through the overflow cap next to the gas tank thats not good.

Should be full overflow tank cap???

You fill up the coolant under the seat like you said but nothing should be seen when looking into the overflow cap next to the gas cap.

Thank you, ridecheap. There's nothing in the overflow tank so I'm glad to know this is normal.

I have a YY250T and when you look at the overflow tank by the gas tank, there is a narrow window down the side of the bottle. It should actually be about half full in the window when the system is stabilized and cool. If low add to the under seat radiator opening. As the radiator heats with running it will get pushed to the overflow tank and when it cools it can be recaptured to the radiator. Same as on cars.

The overflow tank should always be about 1/2 full viewed when the engine is cold. If you have to add anything, it should be a 50/50 mix of antifreeze solution approved for aluminum engines. It should be added to the overflow tank. The only time you should open the radiator cap or the underseat cap is for draining and refilling the system.

Cruizer, interesting as I had posted an update to my post last night. But now it is not there. Don't know why.

I had also suggested filling from the overflow tank. My reason for using the top of the radiator is to keep the radiator full so there would be no air bubbles being sucked through the system. And if the radiator is low you can not fill it from the overflow tank. My update was below the normal post and headed - UPDATE to add the following. Typed and saved. But not here this morning.

But you see we are a bit different on the never open the radiator cap.

The method I described is stated in the Honda manual. When you initially fill the radiator to the top there will usually always be some air in the system. The overflow tank should also be filled 1/2 full. When the engine gets hot, the fluid in the radiator expands and the excess goes to the overflow tank. If there is any air, it also will be pushed out to the overflow tank. When the engine is shut off and the system cools down, it will suck coolant from the overflow tank to replace the air that was expelled when the engine was hot. This will result in a reduced amount of liquid in the overflow tank. Add more coolant to the 1/2 mark. Check over several heating and cooling cycles until the level in the overflow tank remains stable. This will occur when no more air is in the cooling system.

Opening the radiator filler under the seat or on the radiator can introduce more air into the radiator. It's a good idea to consider the radiator as a sealed system and maintain the proper coolant level at the overflow tank.

The radiator should be topped off when doing maintenance like regular coolant change and repairing a coolant leak. After that the overflow tank should be used to maintain the coolant level.

That is correct, you treat it just like you would a car. You always check the OVERFLOW tank and if it is low you fill it UP TO THE HALFWAY MARK with 50/50 antifreeze. Scooter Radiator Cooling systems are no different. You never open the RADIATOR Cap to cap it off AFTER it was orginally filled you use the overflow tank to cap it off.
