Well knocking noises or rattling noises or metal to metal noises. Big difference on the sounds. A knock I would then say it is your crank that noise is very obvious. But apparently you already found out it is a rattling noise which is your Variator weights.
Yes the Variator ramps can get worn and then even with BRAND NEW ROLLERS they will rattle because they fit to loose due to the worn ramp sides. That is what that black stuff is you find when you go and clean it out.
Check it out, put the rollers in and shake the Variator and you will hear a nice rattle rattle. Alleyoop

A little ol Skool mechanics trick. Take a long flat blade screwdriver. Press the blade end firmly against any engine or transmission surface. Wrap your fingers around the end of the handle so that you can cup your hand to your ear while grasping the handle. Probe different surfaces this way.
You will be surprised how well this works. I can easily tell, for example, which valve is chattering, intake or exhaust. Use a thin shaft screwdriver for best results.
