Been having trouble starting my sunny 300cc reverse trike. I'm pretty sure my starter is not fully engaging which is causing the motor not to crank. In the video, doesn't it sound like my starter is not fully engaging?

That my friend sounds like your starter clutch. What kind of oil are you using? Also did you change anything like a performance CDI. Alleyoop

It did not stall. When I'm able to get it cranked it runs perfect. I uses Valvoline motorcycle oil 10w 40 saw.sae. there was a new coil wire installed recently and valves adjusted.

I would first try and just put in regular 10w 40 oil I use 10w 40 Catrol GTX. That oil may be causeing the Starter Clutch to slip. Alleyoop

I would pull the battery and charge it on the bench , then give it a whirl .

The video was made after the battery was fully charged on a trickle charge. What purpose does the engine oil have with the starter clutch? The starter clutch doesn't have contact with oil does it?

Removing the starter is going to be a task. It doesn't look fun at all

Hey Justin, just noticed this thread today-sorry I didn't reply sooner. I agree though, sounds like either something's loose, or a tooth or two is broken off of starter drive/clutch gear. The starter clutch on these puppies is inside the motor case, that's why allyoop is suggesting conventional motor oil. And believe me he knows a thing or two, he's had these or similar types of engines and transmissions torn down to the bone. I sure hope your problem isn't inside the case 'cause that's gonna require a pretty major tear down. Good luck and keep us posted!

Very doubtful that the oil that you are using is causing the starter clutch to slip. We use Valvoline 10w40 and never had that issue.
After listening to your video, it is a starter issue of some sort. Could be the starter, the starter bendix or the starter clutch. Hopefully it is not the starter clutch.
The manual in the Manual section on this forum will show the breakdown. Yamaha YP 250 same motor design.

Am I on the right track here? This is the starter hidden underneath the air tube: This is one of the two bolts to be removed: After removing the two bolts I then will wiggle the starter out in this direction?

Correct, UP and OUT the starter has a RUBBER SEAL on the end of it where it fits inside the case to stop oil from shooting out. Alleyoop

And be real careful with those bolts-they're tight and easy to snap(yes Mr. everything's gotta be real tight found this out the hard way!). Oh yeah, and check your intake hose connection at the air box, it looks loose like mine was.

Thanks guys.....Yes new2scootn, I noticed my connection when taking the pic. When I take the intake hose off I will reattach it better and keep my eye on it in the future. I will get the starter out tomorrow. I've got my fingers crossed that it is just the starter motor/ bendix.
