We run a fleet of scoots which are hired out long term, most are 2 stroke 50cc and have an oil level sensor in the tank which triggers a warning light if the 2 stroke oil gets too low. However we have started running more 4 strokes mainly 125cc in a GY6 format. But we are having problems with lazy/thick customers not checking engine oil via the dipstick, and have had one blown crank and a couple of close calls. My question is does an oil level sensor exist which screws in place of the dipstick, which could activate a warning light if wired into the loom ? I`m not sure how practical an idea this is, what with the inclination of bikes when leaning and the splash effect in the sump. Anybody come across such an item or think it would work ?

This low oil/temp system was very interesting and it's made for a motorcycle. Click the image for a link:
But I couldn't find a guage for oil levels, i.e. something like a fuel guage that reads from full to empty. However, I did find a unit with a spyglass and low oil shutoff. Click the image for a link:
There's also a lot of sending units for a low oil light. But yeah you're right, a analog oil level guage for a small engine is a rare bird.

Cheers Bashan, the only thing I came across was an oil temp gauge which screws into the dipstick hole. Nothing to measure oil level though.

About all one can do on long term lease is some sort of agreement to force the user to be responsible for checking oil levels. I would be real nice to find a way to increase the effective size of the crankcase/oil reservoir to an extra quart. It would run a lot cooler too making for longer engine life.
It isn't very long between people here that write in about how to fix an engine that was ran with out oil. Some of them will never admit it though. If the chinese ever re-engineer the gy6 to a little larger case I hope it includes a sight glass..
