that is a sweet power plant . I have been drooling over the Indians for several years . My hang up is they are air cooled . I live here in the city when you in bumper to bumper traffic not moving they get hot .

a million miles of testing.................wonder how you go about volunteering to be a tester? As much as I admire that term I'm pretty sure it's done on a dyno programmed to replicate actual riding. Either way Polaris doesn't mess around. That they built and tested the motor from scratch in two years says volumes for their ability. Harley would have needed twice that, at least, and used a previous engine as the starting point. I'm betting that, like Victories, this engine uses internal oil cooling circuits to cut down on heat. Unlike Harley I'm sure the design team took all conditions into consideration. I'm sorry KZ, I'm not trying to one up your great posts, I just love these bikes....always have. My Dad had one when I was a little kid. I remember thinking it was the coolest thing in the world. I was looking at the fantastic flash displays on your posts KZ and thought it would be great if I could post them right on the forum (you can't). Then I ran into these Youtubes that had them in video format along with some other great vids. Indulge me....I'm sorry, these bikes are just a weakness of mine.
OK, this was a flash presentation but Polaris turned it into a video file. Very cool....enjoy:
A little more of the sound of the engine:
These unbelieveably lucky boneheads got to ride heritage Indians around as much as they wanted...... .......jerks.....:
A little more history pics, tech, nostalgia, and sales talk:
That is a sweet power plant . I have been drooling over the Indians for several years. My hang up is they are air cooled. Yeah John, I seem to have some drool on my bib, I'm hoping it's from looking at these bikes.
The heat is a valid concern, I know a few Harley owners that complain about their bikes auto-shutdown system that frequently turns their bike off in the heat and traffic. Indian seems to think they have that beat with this hefty oil cooler, a slightly lower compression ratio, and state of the art piston/cylinder construction methods.
My Dad's Indian definately had this engine, or something very similar. I stared at this thing for hours and hours.....I was a troubled child. I remember my Dad had a few choice words for the kick starter from time to time. In fairness, he didn't think much of his Harley kick starters either:
:
This bike does weird things to me.....I feel guilty for some reason jut looking at it.
If I remember right that MSRP has come down a lot, it's certainly in the ballpark with Harley.

Great videos Rich! My Dad, who rides to this day at 86 years old, started out on an Indian Chief shortly after he married Mom in 1947. When Indian died in 1953 he transferred his loyalty to Triumph since Harley was the "bad guys". We were all taught that Harleys were evil and to this day none of us (my two other brothers ride) has ever rode or owned a Harley. Seeing Indian back has struck me to the bone. I doubt I'll ever own one (cost and size) but seeing it kicking Harley's butt will tickle me to death.

Very nice!!! What I don't understand is why does anyone including Polaris want to make a bike that copies Harley as far as looks? Why can't they develop their own look? I'm sorry but that is just plain ugly.

Actually Indian is the older company. All Harleys are a copy of Indian.

Indian was not a company until recently. They went under twice. So they aren't older just an old company that went bankrupt. If they were older they would still be in business under original ownership, etc. So if Polaris is making such a better engine and it seems they are why can't they get away from the look that only Harley has made a go of?
Since they went under and now have returned would it not seem they would want to get away from a bike that they have to compete with? Seems they didn't learn anything? Why not put the better engine in a totally different scheme? Harley people could care less about the engine, they are not going to buy a Indian true Harley people want the word Harley.
Younger people aren't interested, they ride crotch rockets. Why would anyone want to risk a venture competing with an American legend and keep the same design? Why would you want to make a bike that still looks like it was made in the 50's?
I would not buy either one of them.

No I'm not a Harley owner. Never even sat on one, nor a Indian. I wouldn't own either of them. I never said Harley wasn't in the stone ages as far as their style and look. Never said their engines were any good? I never said the Indian engine wasn't better. I simply asked if this engine is so much better and yes I know it's better in ways compared to a engine design that goes back to the days Indian first built it and it was used later by others is when is Indian/Polaris going to put this engine in a modern bike and quit trying to attract people who are suck in the 50's like Harley does? See how old the look is? James Dean if he was here would be proud. ;D
