hello, I have a new 50cc Tao Tao. I had to replace the carb with a new one. I got the new carb into the scooter, but now it is very, very hard to start. Once I do get it started it runs beautifully. Once I turn the scooter off and it sits awhile it is very hard to start again. Just wondering do I need to tune it? Thinking it may need the air/mixture screw adjusted or maybe it needs a valve adjustment? The scooter only has about 35 miles on it. I also tested the battery and it is fine. Thanks in advance! Turn the FUEL RATIO MIXTURE clockwise until it stops and turn it out 2 1/2 turns, see if it starts. Alleyoop

Hey,
Well...we did adjust the mixture screw as suggested, still a no start. I am guessing the we may need to adjust the valves again? As of now we set both at .003. Thinking I should try .004?
Thanks

You do have the AIR FILTER connected right. Don't leave if off otherwise it will get to much air and not enough fuel. If it runs good after it starts and after riding it and shutting it off it starts easy then your problem is just COLD starts and that is a fuel to air mixture problemi.
I have to ask because I do not know how much you know so I am just checking but you do know where the FUEL RATIO MIXTURE screw is and you are not actually turning the IDLE SPEED SCREW?

Hi there again,
Oh, I don't mind questions at all, please ask me anything. I am pretty new to this so asking me questions are noooooo problem at all.
I do know where the mixture screw. I did as you suggested with the mixture screw. I turned it clockwise all the way then counter clock wise 2 and a half turns with no luck. Now I can not even get the scooter to start. It does turn over. Maybe I should try adjusting the valves again? I replaced the carb so i am guessing it is not that. I also noticed just a tiny, tiny bit of gas coming form the fuel filter around the top of the hose. It is a very tiny bit. Would that cause a problem?
Again, thanks so much everyone. :-)

At this point if the valves are truely set at .003 inchs that is fine and that is not your problem.
OK, have you checked for spark? If you have a spare spark plug you do not have to take the one on the motor off. But anyway, Pull the BOOT cap OFF the spark plug and if you have a spare plug stick it into the boot IF not take the plug out and HOLD the spark plug against the VALVE COVER and crank it and see if it is sparking a nice blue spark.
One other thing DO YOU have the KILLSWITCH on the run position. Also some have a killswitch on the sidestand and the sidestand has to be up to start. So put it on the CENTER STAND.
If you have SPARK, then do this: Take the VACUUM hose off the INTAKE MANIFOLD that is the piece that is BLACK and curved and holds the CARB. Squirt a little bit of gas into the connector and put the Vacuum hose back on and try to start it. It should FIRE at least once and may start and die.
Let me know what happened with the above. Alleyoop
