Morphous Transmission Noise By rowdyc (Read 4,208 times)

I've purchased a Yamaha Morphous for a good price but I'm hearing a noise from the transmission. I'm preparing to open the case but wanted some ideas of what to look for.

I'm thinking the previous owner installed a new belt as the scooter has 12k miles and in the trunk was the plastic bag for an OEM CVT belt. There is a kackling, screaching like noise on take off, stopping or backing up. When the scooter is on the center stand the rear wheel is rotating too fast for me. It seems like the clutch is engaging too soon. Since the scooter has an EFI, there is no carb idle issues. I just installed a rear tire to get it home and noticed a burnt rubber smell while riding. I had it up to 82mph. I think the belt was installed incorrectly, grease on the clutch, or maybe something was not tighten to correct specs.

Any suggestions?

Pull the side cover and check the belt, rollers and the clutch. Make sure they installed the belt in the proper arrow flow

Forgot.....check number on belt and make sure is right belt.....

Well LUKE has been on quite a few times already, I am sure he has seen and read this MORPHOUS thread you cannot miss it, but he has not chimed to help another MORPHOUS owner with a question HUMMMMMMMMMM, Perplexing to say the least, Do you THINK!! Nay that couldn't be it.

Have you checked that something is not hitting the tire for the rubber smell. The screaching could be bearings, the brake is applied a little etc..

sorry rowdcy, i just read the thread just now. rowdcy, those guys above who replied to you are experts in fixing scooters, they are by far the best amongst all of the scooter forum members around BUT, when it comes to japanese scooters I AM the authority!! they maybe good with carburetor but not with EFI which is what we have on a

but wait, i just came home from a 200miles drive, kinda tired, i will start the tutorial tomorrow morning. ...class dismiss!!!

btw, i posted a step by step procedure about cvt squeeling in BUSA burgman usa. some of the burgman owners did the procedure on their burgmans and they are happy about the results.

btw, the rollers might be missing one BUT can NEVER NEVER be "out of place" lol, who made that comment? that 4sure made me laugh.

Not good with E.F.I. huh? All of my vehicles have E.F.I., except for the magnum. I installed E.F.I. on my 50cc trike and will be installing a system on the 300. Even E.F.I. systems have some sort of idle speed adjustment on them. I am not familiar with that particular system, but give me a while so I can do some research.

rowdyc, this is my yearly maintenance on my morphous, i usually do it before spring since i do heavy crazy riding during spring and summer. my morph should be in tip top shape,basically i remove the old grease on the Primary sliding sheave component(center) and put fresh grease in it.

the old grease has lost its lubricating properties so it needs to be replenished.
after i replaced it with new grease it should be sliding in and out easily like you'll see on this video that i did yesterday.(it may look like an ex-rated video but trust me it's not).LOL


the reason behind is that as you accelerate this primary sheave opens up while the secondary sheave closes, if the grease is old it doesnt slide freely, thereby hindering the opening and closing of sheaves, there should be syncronicity. otherwise it will squeel when accelerating and as well as decellerating .

you need to clean the ceramic slider too, theres 4 of them, here's where you need to clean them, in betwen the grove , sometimes some carbon shaving gets deposited on thi part so you need to clean it so it will play freely. (alley and magoo, pls don't judge my foot in the picture...i know it's tiny,but it doesnt mean that my *** is tiny too,,LOL,ol)


i always weigh my rollers everytime i open my cvt shyets, theres 8 of them, basically i weigh them and balance them across each, if its out of specs, i replace them.

and i also re-grease the secondary moving sheave bearing, in this picture, if you would look very close in the center inside,there are bearings , i repack them with grease using applicator stick,i see to it that it is filled with Bel Ray grease.


after the procedure i clean the sheaves with lens cleaner to remove impurities and oil



ok this is optional, not all scooterist do this, i disabled my sidestand killswitch thingie, i simply move the toggle switch away from the side stand , i hate this feature of this scooter, its for safety i know but, in asia we dont hav this shyets, cuz we are expert riders. LOL! joke


and dont forget to use locktite this is my favorite, the blue locktite. ( alley,the container is red i know,but the liquid is blue,, bleh!) kidding!
oh, and on this picture below,, you need to be careful in putting locktite, you have to apply 1-3 drops ONLY on the beggining of the thread(bolt),because the liquid might sip in between the metal central bearing housing and the shaft. it will be pain in the neck and arse the next time you disassemble it. just a tip


if you do heavy riding, you need to put at least 10-15% lucas oil stabilizer in your oil for added protection.........more pics to come...
