Think my clutch is slipping... By jshawd40 (Read 13,940 times)

A while back, maybe 4 months ago, I had my variator replaced at a repair shop, and my belt. The issue I was having was the scooter felt like it was slipping under acceleration once the scooter warmed up. Unfortunately, replacing those 2 things didn't resolve the issue. The scooter now has almost 1900 miles on it, and it still slips occasionally once it warms up. Any one else seen this issue before?

The only thing that I have not replaced under the cover would be the clutch assembly. If I'm going to do this, I don't really want to buy a stock clutch again. I'd rather go with a performance setup, but I don't care about gaining acceleration or anything like that. I'm happy with how it drives now. Anyone know of a good clutch assembly to replace a stock stock clutch for this scooter?

When you say your clutch is slipping, can you discribe what its doing? How do you know its slipping?

The problem most likely is that the CLUTCH PADS are GLAZED and are slipping.

Does it slip when starting off slow at low rpms?

Very easy to fix take the Nut off the Clutch and pull the BELL off and get some sandpaper and it does not take much to take the glaze off the 3 pads. You do not even have to take the belt off just sand it while the clutch is still on the shaft if you want.

Hi Richard,

Once the scooter warms up, say about after 7 miles or so, when I accelerate, it's as if the bike momentarily loses momentum for a split second at a time, like a stutter, but it's not the engine.

Hey Alley,

It starts slipping at about 20mph all the way up to say 45 or 50 which is the speed limit where I drive. However, once it's at that speed, the stutter still occurs, but it's less noticeable since I'm already up to speed. Mainly, anytime I accelerate it happens...once it's warmed up. On the way to work in the morning, I never have this issue. I'm assuming the temperature is affecting this in some way, but I could be wrong. This issues happens on the way home everyday for me.

I will try the sand paper this weekend for sure. Should I sand the inside of the drum where the pads make contact as well?

Hey fellas.

So that didn't solve the issue like I'd hope it would. I guess a better way of describing the issue that I am having is more of a bog under acceleration. Now that it is really warm out, it's seems to be getting even worse. Anytime I accelerate, when it's warm out, it does this. After googling the issue a bit further, everything is starting to lead to a possible bad ignition coil. Although, honestly, I have yet to replace the spark plug. Would a faulty spark plug cause this? I figured that if it was a plug, that it would just not give spark anymore, instead of sometimes working.

I only use high octane fuel, and the carb that is in the bike has maybe 1k miles on it. I'm up for any suggestions at this point.

Could it be a lean/rich issue with the fuel? As you guys can see, I'm all over the place with solutions... i honestly don't know what to do... lol.

That is correct it is TO RICH when the temps go up you need to LEAN out the mixture. So Adjust the FUEL RATIO MIXTURE on it. In the FALL when temps are in the 60s and below you need to RICH the Mixture. So give that Screw a 1/2 CLOCKWISE and try it if it still needs more then go 1/4 turns only.

I think the screw on the carb is on the bottom of it... I have to take all the plastics off the back of the scoot to get to it. I can't seem to get to it.

Alley, When you adjust yours, do you have to remove plastics to get to the adjustment screw?

I Have not yet located the air mixture screw, thought it would be somewhere visible.

No on mine I do not have to take anything off I have an access panel to the top of the motor under the seat.
Unfortunatley your fuel ratio screw is under where it attaches to the INTAKE it is a PITA to get to it:
Here is how to adjust it and A picture of your carb and where everything is on that carb.
