I decided to mount my hand held gps (the type used for orienteering, geocaching, not getting lost in the woods) to my Cadillac Scoot to really see how far off my speedometer really was on my chinese Chuanl Protege 150. To give it a fair test I decided to go on my first real road trip of the year and loaded up my camping gear and took off for a few days to the High Uinta Mountains. about 180 miles round trip. I had figured that it was about 12% percent off by road markers and odometer before, maybe 15%. NOT!!!! It was off by 20%!!!
When my speedo read 30 it was actually 24, when 40 it was actually 32, when fifty it was 40 and when 60 it was really 48. Wow, that dropt all my long held ideas about my top end and cruising speeds. I thought on rare occasions I had reached 62 on the flat (maybe a little tail wind) but now only about 55 and cruising instead of 45 to 55 now 40 to 50. I know those are acceptable, especially since I really don't have any upgrades to the engine or cvt, but that's one of the reasons I haven't done any. I thought I was doing pretty good without. Looks like it's time to start some tinkering.

Yep, You would not believe how many believe the Speedo but the 150s are good for 50 and little over if your lucky. And you found out how off they really are. A lot of folks always say mine does 58 and 60 and 65 and they add GPS verified I just laugh. I know they are either telling a little white lie or they did not really GPS it or test it against a cars speed. When your riding in the open like that it feels like your going faster than you really are so it is deceiving. But with some mods without going into the motor you can get it to do 55. Alleyoop

I had a chance to ride by a roadside Radar Speed meter by the side of the road in town. When the 50cc bike speedometer read 25 the Radar flicked between 22 and 23 so I figure about 22.5. That makes my 50cc off by 10%. Now I know that 45 is actually closer to 40 mph, and the top of 50 mph on the speedo is actually 45.

Yes, the faster you go the more it is off. Alleyoop

Had my lfe jacket swiped and my gps was in it. I just bought a used one just like what was swiped on ebay and when it comes I will recheck it. My riva is a tad faster than the 150 and I want to gps that too. I also did a gps speed check on my bandit but can't say what that was cause of the statute of limitations hasn't expired yet!
It chokes me all up listening to some people telling of the speeds they get out of a stock chinese scooter. One in particular boasting of a police verified 67 and bone stock! That would have to be at around 12,000 rpm! Got one in my area claims to have a "chip" in it and a easy 70! I just don't even to bother to argue. john

As I remember my 150 was not linear when I did the gps and as alley says faster you go the worse it gets.
