My sons 49cc Taotao VIP Future Champion will start fine and run smooth for about 30 seconds, then it just shuts down. I can feather the throttle to keep it running a little longer, but will still shut down after a minute or so. I replaced the carb with a brand new one, new spark plug, new CDI, tried bypassing the fuel valve, but no change from any of these. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated !!

Considered that, just wanted to try everything else first because of how well it runs when it first starts.

If the scoot has some miles and the valves were never adjusted, suspect the exhaust valve being tight and staying a little open and loosing compression, before you try and compensate for the tight valve with messing with the carb. Reason is you may be able to get it to start easier by adjusting the carb but you will still have problems after it gets hot. So my suggestion is bite the bullet and adjust the valves .003 inchs both valves. Then if still hard to start we can work on the fuel delivery mixture and right setting for it to start up nice and quick. Alleyoop

Found My 150 to have .001 valve clearance out of the box. These are small valve springs with very little seat pressure, so have a light feel on that feeler gauge when adjusting. good gauge to go by is if you have micrometers stick the feeler gauge into the Mic's and zero in on the specific size. then drag the feeler gauge through to get the correct feel.

Thanks everyone. Looks like I'm going to do the valves and we'll see what happens from there.

Good call, if see little hard to start we can work on the mixture. For starting easy and with just 1 or 2 hits of the start button they need to be pretty will adjusted on the mixture. Alleyoop

Did the valves, adjusted them to .003 gap. Starts and runs great at an idle, but still bogs at full throttle. Thinking I need to adjust the mixture on the new carb I installed. I don't know where this one is currently set at. Any idea where the mixture screw should be set to run properly ?
