The picture is a little fuzzy but that just looks like rubber residue from the belt.
What kind of belt do you have?

Im beginning to think any aftermarket items for these scooters are almost as bad as the quality of the scoots 10 years ago. Too many knockoffs and poor quality. Ill just put the stock one back on and buy a 150 next time!

That's not entirely true. Luke's scooter was built 10 years ago and except for his clutch and variator and fuel pump and electrical connections it works just fine.
The 2003 Helix and Reflex have given adequate service to their riders. I agree with the 150 part a little. In the end you'll find even brand name 150s wanting and end up on a 250. There are very few people who spend their lives on a 50cc. Even Luke started out that way on his SunL, which if he had only come to me, I would have told him was going to be too slow for the superspeedways in Arizona.
The need for speed is in all of us. In six years in my early life I went from a 350 to a 500 to a 1000cc. Age calms you down and a 250 is fine for senior citizens.

250s are bloated touring bikes and have no appeal to me. The HELIX ruined me for life when i saw them
Lord knows who makes all this stuff regardless of who sells it. I get a plain part in a plain box with no names on anything???

Back to the original question..., Is it gunky or is the shiny finish worn off?
I've tried several different kinds of grease on mine. High temp, low temp, fancy high moly paste. Didn't seem to matter what I used it would quickly collect the dust and debris from the belt and get gummed up and jammed. The last time I had it apart I used a little dry graphite powder to see how that behaves. I believe that the normal recommendation is to assemble it clean and dry.

Here's what I don't understand. That bushing is only in contact with the variator at that point. It's steel and the variator is aluminum. The variator wore into it sliding open and closed? I don't get that. I also don't get the discoloration around the rest. There's something going on I don't understand. It's almost like the variator chattered or dragged on the steel. was there also damage to the rollers or sliders?

No. I think theres a bit too much play in the boss variator contact. Elcheapo part I got off ebay for 25 bucks. Should have known better. DLH brand...so much for German manufacturing on these scooter parts.
I put my original back on and is quieter. RPMS are lower and gets about the same performance 0-30 so Im beginning to wonder why these things are so popular? Maybe i just didnt get a good one. MAybe ill try a DP or a Kosso performance variator thats made a little better but my butt dyno tells me its almost the same between running 7500-8000 rpm as it is running stock between 6800-7500..maybe i think necause its louder and vibrating at 8000 it seems faster lol

Hawaii has quite literally thousands of chino scoots running around here. and they all run. They sometimes break down but mostly, they just run and run and run. If you can't seem to get yours to run correctly then I might suggest that you sell your Mini Morphin Power Ranger thingy, get a bus pass and go join a public transportation forum where I'm sure the politicos in charge would so love to hear what you think about the way they maintain things.

Whoa Dude. All he complained about was the lack of quality on an aftermarket part. Not join the Luke choir singing "A Mighty Junker is our China Scoot". There's a reason why many people call it Fleabay. That picture of the burned up variator boss is a good one. A performance variator from a reputable firm is a good idea.
