My performance variator has more play between the boss and the variator than the stock variator. Is there a + or - for this tolerance?

Do you mean from FAN FACE PLATE to VARIATOR FACE PLATE? Or that the VARIATOR has PLAY on the BOSS(Variator hole that the BOSS SLIPS INTO is to wide in Diameter).
If its the space from face to face on the plates that means that variator is more for low end and you will probably loose some top end.
Get a KOSO get in touch with TVNACMAN he sells those and they give good low end and good top end. I know I have one on my Trike and Like it better than the EXPENSIVE PRODIGY I had on it. Alleyoop

Yeah where the boss goes into the hole theres more play than the stocker. WIll look into that Koso Because mine is a DLH and it was only 25 buck...probably not the best quality LOL

Just remember 99.9 percent the reason things you look up are WAY cheaper than other places it is most likely they are SECONDS they did not pass muster. You will find that situation with belts, weights, variators, clutchs, CDIs and R/Rs which are items mostly sought after and replaced. Alleyoop

Thats the problem with the internet. it can make any garage operation look like a 500,000 sq ft business! You just never know.

which weights work best with that Variator on the 50cc? A little more top end would be nice.

Depends largely on your weight. Im 250 and find that 4.5-5gr are good for me. 6gr are what many use. If you drop to 5s and your not a heavyweight youll get some really good acceleration but RPMS will be way too high. Go with sliders and you will get more speed than with the same weight rollers. I like to tune my RPMS to stay between 6800-7800. There is a tradeoff between acceleration and RPMS. Tune for wicked takeoffs and high rpms =low life expectantcy of the motor. A good balance will give you some performance plus some extended engine life.

I can second the Koso variator. They're only cheap, but I've been really pleased with mine. I had to polish the inner diameter and boss so that they ran smoothly, but apart from that it gave me the difference I needed on my 125.

I only weigh 140 so the 6 gram slider weights will do best for me then. I see a lot of performance variators for sale with 14g weights though. Whats up with that?

gotcha. 14 grams weights for 150cc makes sense. Sorry..I'm new to most of this stuff.
