I think I've got this right. The side stand switch keeps the scoot from starting if it's down. I guess it breaks continuity. What feature does it affect? Starter, coil? Anybody, please?

Not all sidestands have a killswitch on them. First check if you see wires going to a switch on the side stand. If no wires then it does not matter if the sidestand is down or not. But to answer your question it effects the CDI it acts just like the killswitch.
Now if the CDI is a DC CDI what the KILLSWITCHS do is cuts off the 12vs going to the CDI and no spark. Alleyoop

Yep, it grounds out the ignition and does it when the side stand is down. I personally think they're a huge pain and disable them. I was going to redo the wiring on my Pegasus but the switch came off so easy I zip tied it in the run position. The wiring varies, if you can post your wiring diagram on this thread or e-mail it to me I'll tell you how to rewire it. It has been a flawless fix so far, I guess a year or more. Here's the thread if you're interested.

I think it is good safety on a scooter unless you have a parking break.

get rid of it,,,they are a royal pain,,i love it when you have a sensitive one and when you hit a sharp bump or hole in the road it shuts off the engine,,,the off road adage "if it ain't there it ain't f--kin up,,,it's like tachs on a bike,,who looks at them at speed?,,,

Fo sho Cyborg, a guy in Talladega had corroded contacts on a Sino 250's side stand switch. It shorted when he hit a bump going through a curve. When the engine stalled he freaked and put it down. I know because I treated him, nasty whiplash. He said he's never getting on two wheels again. He gave it to his cousin who brought to me (very small town) to see if I could get it started. The multi showed the short on continuity.

i generally remove them immediately on first inspection / go thru to make sure everything is kosher before i really start riding it,,oh i'll test ride them of course,,,like my et4 i just got,,but anything substantial on road stuff the machine gets the whole magilla as far as inspection,,on motorcycles it's side stand switch,,clutch switch,,all the nanny idiot proofing,,

Safety switch story: I got a SYM Citycom 300i about a month ago. I ride all winter down here in the south but I've got to have heated gloves, as long as my hands stay warm I stay warm. I would find this baffling but my hands are two feet across. Anyway, I had did a slop job rigging them up to the accessory outlet because I was anxious to ride but hadn't had a chance to properly install the wiring. Consequently I had some wires running over the sun guard on the dash. The gloves worked great on the 41 miles in to work and I was looking forward to the trip home.
There's a tune up shop that is also an unofficial motorcycle shop just down the street from my business. The guys that hang out there are rather large and have designs etched into their arms. They don't seem real friendly but I only say that because they glare at me every time I go by on a scooter.
So I hopped on the Citycom and set out for home. I hadn't gone far when I reached with my right hand to pull my left glove on tighter...and the engine stopped.....right in front of the "tune up shop". Before I could quit swearing four of the arm etchings guys had gathered around my Citycom which I suddenly wished was a Harley pan head for some reason. "Something wrong with the...um....scooter?" queried massive snake tattoo. "UM YEAH! It stalled but I think it's one of those safety lock out things and you probably have them on your bikes and...hee hee hee hee!"
One of the guys said, "you think it could be the kill switch?" as he reached over and snapped mine back to "run". They all turned around as if controlled by a central force and walked back to the shop. Apparently when I reached with my glove the wire hit the kill switch. I tapped the start button and Citycom purred to life. All the way home I'd periodically go "killswitch...freaking KILLSWITCH!!".

Wouldn't it be nice for us dumbkoff's to have a idiot light come on in the dash when the kill sw or side stand sw is in operation?

Back when yamaha was doing better they had a deal where you push the horn button at night in the dark and around the ignition keyhole a light comes on so you can stick the key in on the first try. My riva has that feature. Real easy to do on the manufacturing level.
