Hello. Question about replacing my starter.

That is just like the green wire that was on the one that you had on there. It is the Ground wire so it goes in the same place as the other one behind the screw that holds the starter to the motor.

Hello. I'm ashamed to say I haven't gotten around to replacing the starter yet but I have today off so would like to try tackle it today. Quick , stupid question... Do I need to disconnect the battery before changing it? Not sure if it could give me a shock if I don't. Thanks.

You shouldn`t need to as the red wire won`t be live until the starter button is pressed. However as a general rule of thumb in instances where you are not sure, then just disconnect the earth lead from the battery, that way there is no possibility of a circuit being made.
With any live lead on a scoot there isn`t much possibility of getting a big shock, the main worry is touching the lead accidentally to the engine/frame and shorting the circuit which would burn wires or blow a fuse.

I put off fixing this scooter so bad and so often that by the time I have it running it will be 10 yrs. It's already 2 and has only about 400 miles on it!

I have an excuse for not fixing it and an excuse TO fix it now... Ive been researching my first waverunner and bought it yesterday. I don't have a car so instead of taking 2 busses or a 1hr bike to the marina I'll want to be riding my scooter. The friendly people at my new marina also gave me a VIP spot for my scooter tucked away in a great location. LoL. Here is stock photo of her It will be a whole new breed of animal to learn how to maintain and fix but luckily I've already found a message board for Seadoo Spark owners. Good to hear from you, and you said you where going to get a "BOT" and by George you did. Looking good but watch out for the gators they roam the rivers looking for some fresh meat
And I would suggest to always carry a PADDLE on it, just in case it dies so you can paddle to safety.

Well with the motors they are pretty much what you will find on the scoots and you know all about those

FYI, I recently replaced the starter on my Taotao 50, and when the new part arrived it came with what looks like that same wiring harness. The only problem was that the stock starter I was replacing only had the RED wire going from the starter straight to the solenoid (I'm sure it was grounded - somewhere - but just not with it's own ground wire)! So if yours is the same, just use the existing RED wire instead of the new harness connection . . . it worked fine for me! By the way, congrats on the new toy! I actually lived on a 22' sailboat for a couple of years, and still miss being on the water (so I'm maybe a little jealous)! ::70::

Starters have one lead running to them. It comes from the solenoid which connects the battery directly to the starter with no fuse. The black lead running from the solenoid is actually the red lead from the battery. The solenoid simply makes contact across that cable and energizes the starter directly from the battery to ground. The reason a second cable from the starter isn't needed is because the starter grounds right through the metallic housing of the starter to case which grounds to battery. It doesn't need a ground cable. You could turn your solenoid backwards and hook the red to black and black to red and then act like young Frankenstein. But seriously, it would work, it's just an electric switch, put a current across the small wires and it closes the big switch. It is not directional. But Rob is correct, unhook the ground from the battery if you're going to be messing with those things, it won't kill you unless you have a pacemaker.

thanks guys. ya alley, im learning a LOT about wave runners. also lots of issues with this being the first year of it being on the market and all the problems are coming out of the woodwork but we are helping each other to fix and watch out for them on the seadoo spark message board I bought an emergency paddle and towing membership before I even had the PWC delivered :-)

ok so disconnect ground wire from battery. got it. thanks. im hoping to get her up and going this week and also get to the turning signal relay. honestly i just just take the whole battery out and toss it on the charger inside lol. have a good weekend!

straightbangin Don't throw that starter away. They have brushes and can get a lot of crud inside that ruins the armature where the brushes go. Clean everything up with contact cleaner, check the length of the brushes, they may be ok, just dirty. Use special cloth, can't remember the name, it's for sanding the armature. The hardest part is re-assembly, the bolts are magnetic and stick to everything. Mark the bolt locations on the case,use a wooden dowel to line up one side then be patient, you'll get it. That bo;t will line things up for the other side, remove the dowel and be patient. Oh, put the brushes into their holder with your fingers, put the armature against them, then slip a feeler gauge in there to force the brushes further into their slot which allows the armature to slip by while pulling out the feeler gauge. Be patient. compressed air is a must to blow out all the nasties. If that fixes it great. Take the new one back or sell the fixed one or make a bookend out of it. I have a rebuilt one you can use for the other bookend.

LoL. Thanks. I swear I've never proscratinated on anything so bad as fixing this scooter. I just never want to deal with it and especially don't want to deal with what a pain it looks like to get that starter out, its just in a crappy spot. Today after sitting for about 6 months or so I uncovered it, charged up the battery, tried to start it, nothing, tried to kick start it, nothing, tried to jump the solenoid, nothing. Like dead dead. Went to replace the starter and couldn't get the easier to reach one of the two bolts off. I didnt want to strip it and the new starter didnt come with new bolts so.... I found this guy online who has amazing reviews and he is coming over Sunday. www.yelp.com/biz/mechs-scooter-repair-miami LoL. I just can't deal with it. He's been helping me over the phone and via text a little first. He said he was suprised how much I knew about scooter mechanics. I told him I owe everything I know to the nice fine men of scooterdoc.proboards message board online lol. So Sunday at 10am I'll have a better idea of what's going on. I'll have him do the turning signal relay too etc. I just want it running and street legal at this point lol. The newer dog who ive had for a year hasn't been on it yet. At least my jetski is treating me well. Although I shouldn't say anything and jinx it lol. I love the little fall leaves on the top of the screen when I entered this website. I'm glad they are not falling as i'm trying to type or I would be beyond distracted. I just wanted to update you guys that I'm not dead, my scooter seems to be and help is on the way LOL! I'm glad I found a mechanic who sounds so cool and is into me learning as hes fixing it.
