Bought a fixer upper. It starts and runs for a minute but then when you give it gas it bogs and cuts out. I realized the airbox was removed and a ghetto filter made of element cloth was on carb. I'm assuming that's the issue. Anyone confirm that? And can I just put a cone air filter on? Never owned a scooter and want to doc this up. Scooter starts right up. 4 stroke 50cc

Yes you can put a cone filter on it but you will need to up jet the carb if it not already up-jetted. Have you tried to adjust the Fuel Ratio Mixture it may be just not adjusted right? Model and Engine number would help I assume the motor is a 139QMB which are very common motors on the 50cc scoots. Pictures of the carb area would also help to see what carb is on thee and how it is rigged up. Alleyoop To post pics here you can use this it is free and easy to use: 1. Whf50-s2 is the model number. I'll get engine number tonight. I will also take pics and post them. Messed with fuel ratio but still starts and bogs out after a minute. Never worked on or owned a scooter but I'm determined to get it going

I used a Tupperware air filter housing on one of my scoots for a while. Let me explain. I drilled holes on each side of a regular storage container, sealed an air filter down in it, and covered three of the holes with duct tape. Let me see if I can find a pic.....
This is as close as I can find:
See the Martha Stewart just below the front of the seat? It actually worked great. I set the A/F at 2 1/2, I think it was a 110 main jet, and instead of swapping the jets endlessly out I would tape over or uncover the air holes. What is the difference between adjusting gas to air, or air to gas? You still balance out the mixture. It was a great learning experience and it happened to work in the real world also. Anyway, based on what I learned from that, you have to have a certain amount of resistance to the intake, in addition to the venturi, to work the slide or it will bog (just one possible cause). And you cannot have any leaks on either side of the carb. The vacuum mechanism is in a delicate balance. Rich

OK did everything today and it definitely helped!! Waiting on airbox. Arrives Thursday. ONE QUESTION..... Probably a dumb one but here it is. Without airbox my scooter runs and idles but still bogs is t that because to much air is getting into carb? I'm assuming it is and airbox will fix my issues. Hopefully

OK so everything is going good. Only thing I've noticed is it takes about 5 minutes to fully warm up or else it bogs a bit. Any ideas. After riding for about 4 or 5 minutes is perfectly fine though. Top speed is only about 35. Was hoping to get at least 40 but oh well.

That is because the ENRICHER is feeding it extra fuel so if you jump on it before the ENRICHER shuts off the extra fuel it will bog a little on take offs. You could lessen the effect by turning the Fuel Ratio Mixture screw 1/4 to 1/2 turn Clockwise to cut some fuel off. That might also give you 1-2 more mph or so it is running a little on the rich side which saps some power from the motor. Alleyoop

Yeah even with adjusting things it still bogs unless I let it run for a few. Kind of annoying but it works after. Surprised I made it this far without ever working on a scooter before.
