Anyone have any experience or problems using a 12v cigarette outlet to power things like phone chargers or GPS units, etc?

How many amps are you talking about? What do you need to draw? Rich

I think a USB to charge an iphone only draws 1amp or so

The charging is marginal at best . You might want to upgrade the stator and regulator .

That would not be a problem at all. You could tie it into the hot wire off of the ignition, or like my SYM, wire it right to the battery so that it's hot all of the time. That is not enough draw to tank the battery unless you forgot about and left it hooked up for a week. If you need help with that I can help you, just let me know. I have burned up....I MEAN...wired many scooters. sheesh. Rich

It's one amp John......do you think that's a problem? I agree the system is nominal but that is trickle charge levels. Rich

Yes, I agree. If he wanted to proceed I was going to tell him to put it on a charger if he's not going to ride the bike for a while...even a few days. I have in fact did just that with a GPS on a 150. I know you're not supposed to leave a GPS hooked up to a system under charge but I did that with a Tom Tom and a Battery Tender Junior for well over a year and had no problems. I don't know that I would try that with another charger but those things are incredible. Rich

I would only operate it when the scooter was running. Maybe have a cutoff switch in the line and wire directly to the battery.

I did that with a 150, I would think it should work with a 50. The charging systems are not dramatically different. You make a spark the same way on both types of bikes, one doesn't take more energy than the other. A 50 is easier to turn over for starting but I think the stators are not planets apart as far as energy production. You could always upgrade your stator if need be. John, do they make that 11 coil for a 50? I'm just not versed in that area. Rich

Just an update, I wired it to a switch near the console and only use it when I'm riding. Actually charges my iphone really fast.

Hi, don't know how much this adds to the topic but I installed 12v cig charger couple of months ago in order to connect solar powered trickle charger. Works brilliantly, battery constantly topped up to 12/13v and also able to use it to power my 12v impact wrench when I changed my clutch recently. A worthy addition to any bike. Mine's connected directly to battery with an inline 10a fast blow fuse. Cheers

Even less an electrical draw than stated. A USB charger pulls half an amp at max. The USB 2.0 spec is half amp at 5v. The transformer loses a little power doing it's thing, but only a dead phone battery would pull half an amp. I put a lighter outlet under my seat. The relay is controlled by the ignition, so if I forget the phone on the charger, the battery does not drain. I also installed a switch to turn off the circuit when I am not charging my phone. I do have a 8Ah battery, and I plug it in to a BatteryTender every evening. So far I have had no problems.
