Does the bike operate correctly? Start and run normally?

When you jump the solenoid you just make direct contact with the battery and it spins the starter as Alley said. Now...it starts and you have lights and signals. That means the charging system is working. It means your key switch is probably bad. And Cyborg is correct which means the end is neigh. Rich

Thanks Jerry, I did want the Maxxis because it lasted so long. But I did a little calling around and the stealers had to order it and it was at least a week. I ordered from Bike Bandit this morning and it shipped at NOON! It should be here tomorrow or Thursday. A friend of mine runs a bike shop (backyard) and he wanted to put it on this weekend before he left town. I figure I'll pull the rear wheel Thursday and take it to him.

I ordered the Motion Pro valve adjusters from Bike Bandit today. I'm hoping they keep me from tearing my hair out next time I do the valves on the SYM.
I'll tell you something that I use a surprising amount is extra long screwdrivers. They seem to come to the rescue more than you would think:

Another thread bursting into flames! I think we may be experiencing the mid-winter affective disorder syndrome. Let's take it down a notch folks and take a breath. There, that's better, now a group hug. Hmmm, that's nice and Cyborg quit grabbing my butt! Perv! Okay, we're calm now, let's continue......DING!

They are "Stealers" around here. I found 4 170/40-16's on Bike Bandit. I bought a Metzeler for $100.00. They also had two different Pirellis both sport rated, and an Avon Stryker for a little less than the Metzeler. Bike Bandit is fast and reliable.

How about a Maxxis? It's OEM on the SYM and I'm at 10K. I do need a rear but it's not terrible. I'm just having trouble finding one. It's a 140/70-16

I just went down to the shop and measured two new belts, an 842 20 and an 835 20, they were both 19mm wide. They were both Gates.

Well...so far....
A hooker goes on a fishing trip with six dudes and comes back with a big red snapper.
