You should contact Dave Harrington at www.justgottascoot.comHe's a Kymco fanatic and knows all the good dealers in your area. He even liked the CF Moto Jetmax so he's not a total Chinophobe. I was reading the articles from Dave H in Justgottascoot.com and really liked his comparison of similar models; Majesty and Burgman, two models I also looked at. I looked his pluses and minuses of the model. I like what the Downtown but will also be checking out the Jetmax if GoMoto has one in stock.

Some of the reasons I have been considering the Kymco Downtown 300i is: * Engine size. Rather than avoid a section of highway near my house, it would be nice to get on the road and get where I am heading directly. I could hit 60 with the Jonway, but it took a while to get there. * Tire size. Slightly larger tires just roll better and a little smoother. * Locally sold. Since I had so much problems with the Jonway and getting parts and service, I wanted to go local so I have parts and service. Scooterville has the bike and can service it if it takes more than what I can or want to do. * Bike is getting great reviews, other than leg room. I (unfortunately) am not tall, so leg room shouldn't be an issue. * I am concerned about buying used scoots. Am I going to get someone else's junk? My wife said I could have the same problem with a used car, but as I told her, there is a repair shop every 2 miles in this area. Scooter shops are tougher to find and they don't always repair the other brands of scoots.
Those are my thoughts that brought me to the Kymco Downtown. If I am missing something that I should consider, please update me.
I did look at the Suzuki Burgman 400. It also gets great reviews and is sold locally. Seems to be pricey though. I looked for larger sized CFMoto and Syms, but still like the Kymco. I have not been to a shop to do a 'sit down' comparison yet. That starts Saturday.

Hey Park, I only get cranky when I read your rambling as in your reply #4. And of course when I get rear ended and loose a bike.
That's okay Park, I understand that is just your style.

Looks like it will be totaled.
I talked to the guy who is giving the insurance company the cost information, and he is recommending taking the money.
Now the search for a new (non Jonway) scooter.

Insurance estimator has finally stopped by to look at the scoot. I had a nice write up of what I found at the crash and additional inspection when I got it home. I had the date purchased, date received, company where purchased, etc, etc.
He is sending for pricing information from the scooter repair shop I suggested.
He asked me about totaling it out and giving me a check for $1200. I thought this low for a 2011 Jonway 250 received in April. I have had it only 4 months and now have just over 1000 miles on it.
So what is the value of the scooter that is only 4 months old? If I give him a number that he will agree to, I will buy something else either this fall for a good inventory reduction price or next spring so I can start out the summer driving with a new bike.
That also gets into a search for a new bike, but I don't want to get into that on this post.

Not that I am aware of, she is a year and a half younger than me but looks 5 years older. I don't think she was too sharp.

So it wasn't my Norwegian accent? I figured I type fairly well, I do documentation for work writing the work instructions and have written wine making articles that have been published, so didn't think I was that bad. But it was a funny comment anyway.
Guess I am done riding for a while. I was rear-ended tonight. Ming Sue is parked until she gets repaired and I get my confidence back.
My hands are still shaking, time for a beer.

I was stopped at a yield waiting for traffic to pass. BOOM. What happened. What did I do? Why did the scoot jump? I looked in the mirror, there was a car up my scoots a$$. --'She didn't see me'-- She didn't see my big blue scoot stopped with brake lights on and me sitting on it wearing my bright neon yellow covering?
I was not happy to say the least. She told me there was nothing wrong with my bike and she was going to leave. Argue, argue, argue and she finally agreed to wait for the cops. I won't go into more argue and how she was going to leave even after the cops were called. The cop did chew her out, she was at fault
Damage-Frame looks okay in my quick inspection but it is really tough to tell when your hands are shaking and you are practically sitting in traffic. Rear fender shot, pushed up against tire and muffler. I was able to pull it out to drive the final 1-1/2 miles home. Tail lights, license plate area, etc and need to be replaced. Back skin is broken.
Overall-I am fine, the scoot is repairable. The scoot could have been worse had the woman been going a little faster. Had it been worse (and me still okay), I would be shopping for something new to drive instead of looking for a shop to do the repairs.

"Just read Vintner's stories about the wheel, fuel pump and front end bearing saga. great reading!! What is with the accent coming thru the typing???"I went to broadcast school in Thief River Falls (for those not familiar with the state, it is way up north Minnesota) and the instructor kept telling me I had to loose my Norwegian accent. Yes, I was a disk jockey for a couple years. I didn't know I typed with the accent too. I should have you ride my scoot and see if it feels right to you. It still feels sloppy to me, but I haven't figured out if it is down at the wheel or further up the steering system.

YEAH! Ming Sue is back on the road. I can feel that she is smoother riding that when I first took her out when she was new. Braking is more firm, no shifting of the handlebars as she did earlier. So happy to be able to ride it again. However, next week's forecast is either hot or raining. May not get to ride it much, but at least I will be able to put my garage back into shape again and be able to park the Vue inside.

Went to a large bearing sales location-told me I was S-O-L. By chance, stopped at Go Moto on Washington. Darned if he didn't have the bearing. Paid for that and ready to start installing tonight. ;D

Got in a bearing set by mail. Not even close to fitting my scooter. I can't find anything online, so was my scooter build with odd parts or are they just not listed on websites?
I guess today I will drive around Minneapolis to look for someone that has bearings or can provide names of someone that would carry them.

That is very helpful jct, gives me a much better feeling to the degree of 'horsin' it down that I need to do.
Oops...just got a call from Thrifty, no parts in stock. Gotta keep looking for the neck bearings.

Parts on order from Thrifty Scooters, hopefully the won't dally on shipping.
Now my questions-how much should the hardware be tightened to properly fit with the bearings? The bearings ride primarily in two points, top and bottom (frame to shaft neck) but also has contact on the sides. Top and bottom are primary strength points for weight of the scooter as well as offering little resistance for turning. The sides are a impact point when braking with the front brake. Too little tightening and the bearings are sloppy in the guide and may be banged around and be damaged (again). Can they be too tight? Should the nuts be snugged down just so the bearings and shaft are not sloppy?
Any specs for this procedure or suggestions on reassembly?
