Smoking...BLUE ... burning oil...if it is a new rebuild this may occur until the rings seat... Let it warm up for a few minutes...before giving it throttle...it could be also running rich. My scooter is perfectly tuned and I can stall it giving it gas when it starts... Replace the whole exhaust... the pipe will be paper thin... get a stainless exhaust pipe and it will outlast the scooter... If the carb is totally clean and no holes in the diaphragm why replace it? It was only blue initially, which I think was just burning off oil that got in during the rebuild. I didn't really run it long enough to see if it would completely clear up. Frustration and disappointment took over and I essentially stormed into the house. Haven't touched the bike since. Tools still splayed about. I'm certain its running rich... the plug is coming out sooty black. Could the fact that I'm using a blown exhaust be a part of the problem??? If you take it off and shake it, you can hear the baffles rattling. While I don't have the money right now, I do want to replace the whole exhaust, again. I'm not a fan of shiny, so unless you know a good way to paint a stainless pipe, I don't want one. I have a stock variety muffler to use for now, but I need to make a bracket for it, or modify the one I have. (It wasn't the stock variety for my scoot...) I'm positive that the carb is clean, but I don't know if its working right. I was going to spend the ~$30 just for the peace of mind and to rule that out. I'm seriously open to suggestions on how to proceed.

With a B&S muffler just make sure you have an appropriate air cleaner and do check the jetting as you need to be on the rich side. john What do you mean by appropriate air cleaner? I still have the factory airbox installed on the bike.

Now that I've had some time to calm down after a disappointing weekend...
I could get it idle again and compression was up slightly. Perhaps its a faulty tool or not suited to a small cylinder (as I did read on some of the Harbor Freight reviews).
Lets talk about the symptoms: -Plug is black. -I was getting some smoke out the exhaust. Initially it was blue, but that started to dissipate the more it ran, so I attributed that to opening up the cylinder. I didn't run it too long this time and it did seem to be going away. -Dies as soon as you give it gas. This time I was able to rev it up once and get the back wheel to move for a second before it died.
Considered course of action: -Replace all hoses and clamps. -Order a new carb. -B&S muffler. The exhaust I'm using is falling apart (loose baffles) and I cannot mount the other one I have without a different bracket. The one that's falling apart is going to be sacrificed for the header pipe for B&S mod.

why are you trying to use old parts? put a new top end on it and ride. if you have the ability to come this far you have the ability to make it run with all new parts. I don't doubt my ability to perform the tasks needed, but I lack the experience to know what I'm doing. Just call my frustrated. I haven't ridden in 6 months. I need to ride. You make it sound so easy. This isn't a standard GY6 motor, so I've had a hard time finding parts. My head stud spacing is slightly larger than standard, so most of the heads and cylinder kits you see will not work. I'm weighing my options, but most will require waiting on funds: -Find a scooter or small motor mechanic. -Buy parts to fix this motor. -Buy new motor. -Finally do the 250 swap I've dreamed about. -Buy a motorcycle. That last one will probably happen anyway. In which case, I may just sit on the scooter until I can decide what to do.

you quit? dont give up just yet. theres got to be a reason your getting low compression... maybe the gauge is broke? i would try to get a second opinion before your call it quits. i want to see that bike on the road! I quit. Changed head gasket. Compression went up to about 90.

When I got mine three years ago, I was living in Kissimmee. I rode it everywhere... Orlando, Winter Park, Cleremont. I took out to the beach in Melbourne once and then another time I even rode it all the way out to St. Pete Beach and back in a weekend. All in all, I've got about 12,000 miles on it. Many were hard miles though... no wonder I'm on my second engine.

Once calibrated, works great and accurate. I don't think I have too many details on how I installed it, but if you have any questions, I can try to help.
Basic steps (I think I make it sound more complicated than it really was): -Epoxy a rare earth magnet from Radio Shack to edge of rim. -Mount Sensor to fork. (I had to fab a small bracket to get the sensor close enough to the magnet.) -Lengthen sensor wire to reach handlebars. -Mount computer to handlebars as intended, or velcro to panel.
Sigma Computers are the best. You can find alot of information on the web about people using them on motorcycles. The cheapo Schwinn's/Bell's/etc.. from Walmart are crap. They'll get to about 45mph then die. You've also got to use the wired models as wireless ones can't keep up.

Many people just buy and install a bicycle cyclocomputer and be done with it. That's what I did when my speedo cable broke. Works great.

The important thing to remember to remember is that is first and foremost a charity event.
You register online. Looks like its $30 this year.
Day of the event you show up, get a goodie bag and a T-shirt. Park your scooter and socialize while you wait for the ride to start. There's then an organized ride through some of the nicer parts of Orlando with a police escort. Definitely the highlight!
Last year there was also a silent auction and a scooter raffle, some vendors, plus a few performers on the small stage.
Personally, I didn't stay very long after the ride ended and the raffle.

There are more than a few scoot clubs in Florida and most that I'm aware of will have annual rallies. Perhaps we could just simply arrange to meet at one of those, or maybe ScooterDoc could start having its own rallies. Coming up in March, here in Orlando is the annual Scooters4Hooters. scooters4hooters.com/I participated last year and I'm planning to do so again, so long as the Matrix is running soon.

Use copper gasket spray on the new gaskets.. follow the direction on the can to the letter... Open throttle will give you consistency.. not sure what the impact is on a GY6 I've got a can of Permatex copper ready to go! Sprocket, when replacing a head gasket, do you have to change the base gasket, too? I'm just worried about screwing something else up while pulling jug off the piston.

Hey brotha I too have the same engine I got it from Scrappy Dog scooters and the I checked the compression it was at 175psi. yours seems to be too low. While checking compression did you have the throttle opened all the way cause if not it will read low. You've got a point. I missed the step in the instructions about turning the throttle. I was only checking compression from turning the engine over with the starter. I'll check compression again tonight before I order the gasket set. That being said, this engine has a few thousand miles on it and the head I'm using has over 8,000K miles on it. Not to mention the head gasket is questionable at best, since I was trying to re-use an old one. Leaks are very possible. I may just go ahead and order the gasket set. That way I can pull the head again to absolutely verify TDC.
