Sounds like everyone is pretty much in agreement...
1. Check for overheating
2. Try to update the firmware
3. If it's more complicated than that, either with locked down software or with soldered on components, raise the white flag.
On a side note, @faceplantforlife, don't forget Occam's Razor. If you're not familiar, Google it. You strike me as the type of guy who, like me, has a tendency to "miss the forest for the trees." Sometimes, I get so caught up in thinking about how each individual component of any system could be causing a failure that I forget to analyze the system as a whole. K.I.S.S.

The board is simply not overheating. The fans never even speed up. Maybe that's due to a faulty temperature sensor? I'll probably never know. The firmware is as updated as it's going to get, also. I just took the motherboard out one more time today and "reflowed" it with a heat gun. I hope this works.

It causes a severe twitch in your dominant arm for as long as it's powered. on. The controller is there to do nothing at all but to convince you that you might be able to control the twitch. Also you can't turn it off, because if you try to, your arm will simply twitch away from the power button. Happy twitching!

John knows what they are, he knows computers in and out, he uses Linux, and he knows about games. He's been doing his mental jabs, and I've been chuckling. Rich

just yanking a loose chain Make that two loose chains and I used to build my own computers. I never got into the gaming thing and it didn't take long for technology to fly right over my head.

Here's the deal, people are scared to open that case....THAT is what keeps a tech in business. That fear of what is going on in there. On the surface it really isn't that complex but you have to know what can do some harm and what is benign. I just built a machine for a relative (mistake!) and he deleted a security program and now it's mega infected. I'm going to have to do a remote install of windows 7 (Bama to Toledo) and reinstall all of the programs...remotely....help me. Anyway, damage can be done by the novice, they just have to STOP CLICKING!
What I'm wondering brohaus is how can you lock a client out of parts of their own computer? I'm sure I'd have to take over as primo admin...no problem there. Then set up another account as user, but limit their access to the computer. In essence, I would be the owner/admin, and they would be the second user. Then I would have to limit their access to the control panel, task manager, etc. so they can't trash the damn thing that I just built. The guy is older, it's not his fault. I have to find a way to work around this and be.....um....gentle. I've looked into user parameters but it's mainly for internet content, not within the machine itself. I am open to all suggestions. Rich I agree with you Bashan. If it wasn't for the fact that most people are clueless as to how computer hardware/software worked, I probably wouldn't have made a lot of the money I have saved up now. I'm what most of the family call the "tech". I have to come to the rescue all the time, whether it be because of some "unknown" popup for an update (ahem, java) that somebody doesn't know if they should do, or if somebody forgot their password (I had to guide someone through a text only interface running on the Linux kernel before, and it wasn't fun, because she was clueless.). As for restricting users, I think the best approach is as you said, making them a standard user and only letting them do certain things (UAC is very helpful in this sense). Windows has a lot of options in GP about what a standard user can and can't do without administrative credentials. I would personally look into setting up GP for them. I know our school has made good use of network based GP, which restricts all students from configuring anything like wireless networks or opening the control panel or task manager (I wish they would give us the task manager, but then again it doesn't matter, seeing how I'm banned from our school districts computer network...).

Great ideas, I will look into that tomorrow!
But the Java thing...what is up with that? I researched this and Java says it asks for an update about once a week?! This damn thing pops up two...three times a day. I set up the java console for my clients and put it on the desktop. I tell them to click on that instead of the damn pop up. I have set up some serious security protocols...Eset, System Mechanic, MSE, I can't think of the rest, but it keeps popping up! I've followed the URL and most of the time it LOOKS like Oracle but who the hell knows. This thing is becoming a PITA. You got any thoughts Plant Guy? What's your real name anyway? No disrespect meant, Rich
