Excellent tribute, JR.
When I first joined the forum last year, everyone here really did so much to help me get familiar with my first scooter. In particular, Rich went out of his way in private to keep me motivated and make sure I was getting all the information I needed. His sense of humor was truly one of a kind. Even though I never got the chance to meet the man, it is clear to see that he was one hell of a guy.

There's no way to say for sure. There are too many variables in the mix. Riding RPMs, Ambient Temp., Ambient Humidity, Airflow across the cooling fins... The answer to your question changes dependently on the balance of many conditions. That's my $0.02 at least

I'll knock on wood here, but it looks like my spring break and the weather might just line up enough so that I can spend a Monday and Tuesday next week on a scoot inspection, then ride the rest of the week. If that plan holds, I'm going to record the process.

I'm still waiting to see an in depth look at the new TaoTao Quantum 150. I think it's hideous, but I sure am jealous of that digital gauge cluster.

Well, I bought all my tomato and pepper seeds today. It's time to get the garden started. It's my first spring with my scooter, but I'm guessing it's probably also time to start prepping it for spring as well.
I didn't really do anything in the way of winterizing. I start it up every week or two and let it run for 20 minutes or so just to run a little petrol through it, but that's really it. I'm certain I could put some air in the tires and hit the road and be okay, but my guess is that it's probably not wise to do so.
My plan is to re-accomplish the same PDI steps I performed when I uncrated it almost a year ago: Take off the body panels, inspect the frame, set the valves, change the fluids, torque the bolts, check the screws... You get the idea.
Is this overkill? Underkill? Anything to which I should pay special attention?

I heard this one a couple weeks back. I can't remember it verbatim but I think you guys will enjoy it...
Marge and Jan, two women sick of their husbands and children, one night are able to get away for a while, just gals. Marge and Jan have a great night. Appletini's all-around. Closing time rolls around and the two of them, unable to drive home, make the wise decision to walk home. It's only a few blocks away. Halfway home, they both need to pee...REAL BAD. Luckily for them, when nature called they were just across the street from a cemetery. Marge found an acceptable spot, did her business, then used her underwear to wipe and tossed them in the woods. Jan also emptied her bladder. She grabbed a fresh wreath off a nearby grave and wiped with it. The two of them continued on home without incident.
At 7:00 a.m. the next morning, the phone in Jan's house is ringing off the hook. Her husband answers and soon learns that the person on the other end of the line is Marge's husband. "NO MORE GIRLS' NIGHTS!" he exclaimed. "When Marge came home last night she wasn't wearing any panties." Jan's husband says, "THAT'S NOTHING! My wife came home with a card stuffed in the crack of her arse that says, "We'll never forget you, Signed 'All the boys down at the fire-station.'"

wow are we on this same ol saw??? The Doc had problems???,,i thought it was smooth sailing with him,,,,i think i have to get my raincoat hat and boots on,,,it's gettin deep in here,,,what say you Doc? ? It's obvious I haven't been around in a while. I thought I'd pop in to see how things are here on the forum. I blocked LUKE a long time ago but when I made my return this evening I wasn't logged in so his previous post showed up. Under different circumstances, I wouldn't chime in on anything he has to say. Because he made up a story about me however, I thought I'd set the record straight. To this day, I've had a great experience with my scoot. Just like everyone promised, doing the prep work up front seems to have shielded me from problems thus far. I've only had one problem to speak of, and that is one of the welds on my luggage rack broke. I ordered a new one from Eagle ATV. At first, they didn't send me the correct part but their customer service is actually pretty good and they worked with me to make sure I was taken care of. To go even further, the luggage rack issue was probably my fault. I had pretty much been using it to lift the bike up every time I put it on the center stand. It's been a while since I've ridden. It's just been too cold or rainy for me. If I remember correctly, I've got about 1800 trouble free Km on the scoot. I go out to the garage and start it up and run it for 10 minutes or so every couple weeks and it's still firing up like it should. I'm 100% happy with my purchase and recommend the same to everyone I come across. In fact, I'm strongly considering following mxmatt and putting a Chinese 250 next to it in the garage.

Thanks for posting the link to that story! That read kept me up way too late. It's rare that someone documents something so thoroughly.

Holy smokes, guys. I didn't really expect or need any responses. When I first posted this, it was midnight, I was exhausted, and I was totally disappointed after pulling the lid off the canner. Like I said, I just wanted to vent. I didn't expect any replies. JR , you're right. I could have re-processed the failed seals. Luckily enough for me, the next morning I was contacted by two separate out-of-town friends who were planning on being in town that week at differing times. I just put the sauce in question in the fridgermafrator and served two amazing pasta meals. Problem solved. I've done a lot of canning between then and now...all much more successfully. Today was of certain importance though because it was the first day I was able to get all 4 of my kids fully involved... and instead of it being a lesson alone, they all knew their own role in the process and joyfully lent their hands in the effort. They were actually VERY helpful. Up until now, it's just been me teaching them. I sent them all out to the garden this morning to pick tomatoes. My oldest daughter (also a cancer survivor, by the way guys) then cored all the tomatoes. After I scalded the tomatoes, all of the kids peeled them. Waylon, my 3 year old, puts his siblings to shame in the tomato peeling department. By the time my wife (also a nurse) got home from work, we darn near had things wrapped up. Awesome day. I guess what I'm getting at here is that my original post was one made out of momentary frustration. That frustration was fleeting and really not that big of a deal. In fact, that was my first and, fingers crossed, only canning failure. Growing and preserving my own food is, and always has been, a deeply satisfying thing for this scooter rider. Even more satisfying is that I can do so with my children, just as my grandma did with me. There are plenty of things in life about which a guy could get upset. Blown-up jars of spaghetti sauce in the canner is not one of those things. Please don't mistake my venting for an actual complaint about my circumstances.

The wife and I have been monitoring the tomato crop for the last few weeks. At least one week ago, we anticipated that today would be the day to pick and can our first big haul of tomatoes. I could go into a lot of self-gratifying detail, but I won't. Long story short: She hounded me about "Us" needing to can tomatoes. I started alone at 10 a.m. I had to beg her to lend me a hand at 6 p.m. She had one job: put the lids on the jars. Result: she screwed up. 4 of 7 jars are now toast. She didn't tighten the bands. She just left 'em loose. I spent about 14 hours, only 30 minutes of which was done with help, making and canning pasta sauce. 14 hours, 3 quarts of pasta sauce. 14 for 7 makes some sense. 14 for 3 is a total waste of my time.

My favorite thing about Dana Carvey is that I don't think he can't turn it off. He'd be a real hoot at a funeral. He was on the Tonight Show last week. It was the first time I'd seen him in years and he was as good as ever.
