OK. A few things. First and most important in my mind. The story concentrated on the $100 BMS which only needed a starter bearing to be fine, but grease got it through, and it developed an oil leak that didn't cripple it. Any more proof needed that a GY6 flat works if used conscientiously?
What the story didn't mention, hardly at all is the Chinese CT 70 clone. It never malfunctioned, it ran coast to coast. TROUBLE FREE!! If Chinese engines are such junk we would have heard how it needed extensive care. It didn't.
Remember the Maine to Key West fiasco three years ago? Dunderhead wailed for hours at a time Wide Freaking Open on Interstates and by golly, the scooter blew up. These guys stayed on secondary roads across America running many 300 mile days. That was what Maine to Key West clown should have done. To say this is recommendation of Chinese scooters is an understatement. This shows how good they are, used properly. Bravo to these guys.

Thanks for posting the link to that story! That read kept me up way too late. It's rare that someone documents something so thoroughly.

Great story. Reminds me of when I used to just hop on my bike and cruise till I wound up somewhere. Wish I could do that now. Trying to talk the wife into a road trip with me around the country. See all the tourist things.

Did those of you who followed this story, happen to catch the fact that these fellas, did this trip running a 10w/40 conventional motor oil?
People spending 7 to 10 dollars, for a quart of some exotic super lube, just to run around town, might want to rethink the logic in their choice of oils.

short trips are more punishing to the motor than long trips. so i need those quality 7-8 buck motor oil for more protection. plus i add some 20% lucas oil stabilizer to my oil. that takes care of the morning start ups when all the oll are down in the reservoir , the lucas clings to the piston block to prevent dry start ups.... copish?

Those short trips also cause condensation to build up in the oil and the synthetics are less prone to that. It's cheap insurance.

Look guys...we all know that stop and go driving, and mostly short trip operation, will require more frequent oil changes......but if you can't see.... that running a 125 to 150cc scooter 10 hours a day, over 3 mountain ranges, from coast to coast, in 16 days, is going to stress these engines far more than the normal pleasure rides, or commutes most of us do.....then, I don't know Still say a trip like this one, on regular 10w/40, is quite a tribute to today's conventional motor oils.... Keep using your super lubes, it's no skin off my nose....Happy Scooting ...Bob

I still say that, with frequent changes at regular intervals (1000 miles) it don't matter what kinda oil is used (syn or dino).
