I have a chance to get a 2005 Yamaha Majesty 400. What should I be looking for? It has 43,000 miles on it. $1,500

I know the answer to this so let me say it first. Make sure the services have been kept up with. JCT842 will tell you the troubles you'll have if the air filters weren't changed at regular intervals. Worn rings and cylinder will follow. Especially at 43,000 miles. If it's been cared for 43,000 shouldn't matter, if not---Brrrrrrr.

GM, you are asking the wrong people, our yamahas are liquid cooled and fuel injected oh and uses catalytic converter and counterbalance . go to the yamaha majesty forum or maxiscooter. com.

I would insist on running a compression test or I wouldn't take it.

And what do you think they would tell him? "Check the service records"? A clue Luke. Motorcyclists have been doing this since Indian first started doing business in 1901, scooters since 1946. Guess who knows what to look for in a two wheeled vehicle first? GM look at the tires, look at the oil, feel the brakes, start it and listen for odd noises, look for blue smoke, put the bike on the centerstand and grab the wheels and check for play in the wheel bearings. Grab the front brake and bounce the front end. Then push the bike back and forth to check the steering head bearings. A test ride will tell you the rest. Listen for noises, odd vibrations and how it tracks. That should tell you all you need to know.

Did you see the part about smoke and noises? A ride will reveal compression. If it runs good compression is fine.

Did you see the part about smoke and noises? A ride will reveal compression. If it runs good compression is fine. wait a minute, some would use a thicker oil to gain compresssion and will run good for a while BUT the truth is , with a regular oil, compression is low. not all running motor has good compression... get the records straight, do a compression test using a compressiion tester period!! dont be like kz, who taps his finger into the spark plug hole then starts the engine, if the motor sucks his finger he concludes that the compression is good,, oh my gad!!!

I've used the compression test ploy several times and I like to do it for a couple of reasons. First, I just like to see the numbers to be sure. Second, it only involves taking the plug out, not a lot to ask. But if the seller starts looking antsy or asks why I want to do that.....I get suspicious.

Mine ran just ok, but after riding a crotch rocket for 7 years I did not expect the same type of performance. I had a real bad knee and did not ride it a lot then. Had I gotten a compression test it would have been another story. I really wanted to get a new 300cc chinese but no one in jan of 2010 had a white one in stock and I got in a hurry for a ride. A majesty will ride decent with low compression, right up to before it starts blowing smoke. In 2010 there still was no after market filters and the set of 3 it takes ran $92 at the stealer shop and that is the incentive for not changing or running with out filters on the older majesty's. A majesty sucks up the air and dirt the front wheel kicks up and the intake is on the bottom of the scooter where it can get the most. Yamaha still thinks that is a great idea! I did the work on the overhaul and it would have cost over $1000 in the stealer shop. No matter who did the work I feel I have way over $1000 in it over what it is worth. Parts are a pain in the arse, chinese parts can be had next day should you want to pay the extra shipping, where a yamaha part is going to be at least 7 or 8 days no matter how much you pay for shipping or order at the stealers shop for 30% more. The piston and rings were over a month for mine. I can tell you one thing if you inspect the airfilters and find the gasket on each side of the filter is a square one, they leak and I would run like hell from the deal. The made different gaskets are a round kind of soft rubber or foam. The gasket frames are huge for size of filter all 3 are different sized, 2 for the engine air and one for the transmission. The area of the 2 engine filters is as much as my malibu if that tells you any thing about the expectations of yamaha on scooping up air from underneath the scooter 7 or 8 inches from the road! and they get filty clogged up in 1000 miles on a dirt road like I live on. I wont tell you what to buy or not buy, this is just my experiences.

And run like hell if you find any oil at all in the left air filter.

at 40000 plus i would pass,,i usually pass on anything with more than 10-12000 miles unless it's a rare or old bike,,,,or i get it for nothing as in a few hundred ,,,then i'll take a chance,,,if it was me,,,,no,,,thats alot of miles for any bike,,,,,i'd even look sideways at a full size bmw with that many miles and they would produce all the paperwork and that mfer would have to be clean clean clean,,,,,buy the balanced and blueprinted mill and stuff it in the ride you have already,,,sorry for the rant
