Rather that hijack Andy's thread (AGAIN!) this time I'm starting a new thread to continue the debate from another thread. Here is the best guitar player in the world IMO...Joe Satriani. In this video he not only shows blinding speed but fantastic improvisational skills...AND he plays for a while with his teeth!
Now, read this article and read the list of famous guitarists that TOOK LESSONS from Joe. Many of them say they can't hold a candle to Joe and were honored to be taught by him. One more video:

Yep, That was a really nice pentatonic minor improv over a basic 12 bar. I never said he isn't good, just that others are better.
Check this one:
Or this:
Or lets have some electrified goodies...
Or even this gem...
There's so many more to add, but I'll let these touch your soul for now...

Slash.... *look of bemused humor on my face* Slash.... LOL Slash. What can I say about Slash? (Rich and I already had this discussion) The man knows his scales. At least two of them anyway....

One of Elton's guitar players was Caleb Quaye. I know Caleb. He is an undisputed Master of pentatonic leads. He is able to wring emotion out of two simple notes and make it totally fit the music. He's a lot like Clapton.
Another name that pops up often is SRV. He is very good, but the real test of a guitar player is how well he transmits the emotion of what he is playing to the audience. A million notes every measure is not exactly the best way to do that. SRV is a very flashy player. Very technically gifted, but he doesn't inspire you to cry in joy or pain with his music.
Close your eyes and listen to Tears in Heaven and REALLY listen to the pain in Erics voice and his guitar at the same time. That's what guitar is all about.
Listen to Davids pain as he remembers Syd. By the way, in case you don't know the story, the version you are listening to of Shine On was recorded with Syd in the other room. He just showed up at the studio and he looked half dead from the drug abuse and David and Roger nearly broke down looking at him. When I listen to this, I can hear anguish in Davids and Rogers voices over Syd's condition. They almost didn't finish the recording that day.
Or hear the sheer joy of being alive in Leo's voice:
Music is all about emotion. There is a long technical discussion I do with all my students on this but the short version is right here for you to hear. If it doesn't inspire emotion in the listener, then its only sound, not music.

electric guitar sucks, sounds to me as good as fingernails on blackboard when they dial in the distortion. Nothing like a good bluegrasser on a martin.
They take a $5000 electric, pipe it into the distortion box and it comes out just as good as a 9 year old kid with a broken speaker and a $25 amp.

Taylor makes some great guitars. The 210 is an excellent choice. I especially like the cutaway.
