Went out today scootcaching with my dad today. He runs a Linhai 260 Mainstreet it is a quite a bit heavier than my Jonway.
So I had decided to take it easy today and drive keeping the rpms down around 4000 since the temps were around 82 today I wanted to keep my scooter cool which worked quite well. It was stop and go from 10 am until after 6 pm. My scooter never missed a beat I always had plenty of battery to start the scooter. After 6 we are on the way home I just told my dad ok just going home so we can just cruise hwy speeds now picked up the pace stopped for gas 40 min later. Scooter would not start. Go figure as soon as i brought the RPMs up over 5000 the cooling fan comes on and stays on the whole time we are running. Ok so that had nothing to do with the gravel. Now on to the gravel issue.
SO anyway taking it easy and backroads probably the only reason that what happened was not worse. So we are just coasting along about 35 mph I come around a corner and the whole corner has gravel accros we are on the our lane was the inside corner and had some gravel on enough that it caused me to drift into the other lane. I was like crap. I sure hope dad makes it around that one with no problems and does not end up in that other lane much as there is a LOT of gravel there. So I am looking in my mirror and my worst nightmare happens I am watching as he comes around the corner sure enough the gravel throws him out and worse than me he ended up drifting way outside up and hits the worse gravel. Ends up locking up the brakes and hits the shoulder with wet grass all is see his him going down bam right now and then he was gone could not see him any more. I make a quick U turn and get back over there to find his scoot laying on its side he is up walking around where he left the pavement he lost a shoe we thought it was under the bike as his leg had ended up under the left side. There was a bit of a bank we had to roll the scoot back up on to the shoulder. We then evaluated the damage. Mostly just dirt on the left side. and it tweeked the handle bars a bit NO major damage. My guess is that had it not been down pour the night before the ground would have been really hard and would have done more damage to the scooter as well as my Dad. Both are fine couple of band aids and are good to go.
What we learn from all this is be very careful of less traveled roads corns seem to have gravel on them all the time and after storms sholders really wash down bad. So Everyone be very careful.

Im glad your dads ok. I was draggin pegs on a new road when I was younger. I came around a corner and some kids had thrown sand on the road. It was like hitting ice. I slid off the road and into the ditch. I've been pretty lucky with the stupid things I did on a motorcycle when I was younger. I figure my lucks gotta be almost out so now I take it quite a bit easier. ;D

For sure gravel sucks! Our roads were in pretty good shape and then we had some very heavy rains. I'm back to being super careful on turns. I'm glad your dad is ok.

Ugh...this is one of my biggest pet peeves...
I live in a fairly hilly area (especially backroads - prime scootin' territory of course), and it seems that practically EVERYONE wants to live on top of a hill with a big, long, gravel driveway that runs right into the road. Predictably, it rains, and all the gravel just runs out into the road. Do any of these driveway owners give a rats arse? NO. They just leave it out in the road until traffic knocks the worst of it out of the way, making it relatively scoot-safe again. I actually have memorized all of these on my "daily" routes, and make a conscious effort to be more careful around them after it rains.
Yes, it's absolute murder on a bike, but it's even dangerous to cars. I personally feel that people should be held legally responsible for this sort of thing. I mean, if I poured an oil slick in the middle of the interstate and killed 20 people in the ensuing pileup I'm pretty sure somebody would be after a piece of my hide, right? I don't see this as being any different. It's boobytrapping the highway by way of negligence by the property owner.
I'll just end my rant there. Glad your pops came through relatively unscathed, damin.
