There's no faster way to learn than by jumping in the deep end head first. If you feel good about it, then go for it.

Its really hard to read some one who is selling on craigs list or any of the other places. There is a guy around here who has had an older goldwing for sale the last 2 years for $3000. He used to put it on the radio station 2 3 times a week as well as a weekly in the local paper. Put it on craigs a few times too. It is not being ridden and he will not come down a penny on price. When he started it may have been worth near what he asked but not now. When a big bike sits for an extended time to get it back up running you can pretty well figure any where from $1000 to $1800 to get it back on the road. Every time I took my old wing in for both tires it was a $500 job and that was 30 years ago.
A small bike like you are talking about should not be any big deal. Just that the owners are motivated to sell. Financing a used scooter or bike especially if you are hurting for money I still think is a bad idea. The what if's are should it break down your payments keep coming and might be hard to go for the repair.
There was a majesty just like mine except a 05 on craigs list last time I looked for $700. Same symtoms mine had, oil in the left air filter. That is at least a $1000 repair and a month waiting on parts from japan. Not so good a deal, we have no idea how good of running shape the rest of it is and you spend $1700 or more to find out. Not always but often a used bike is going to need some money spent on it and if you have all the spare money tied up in payments you can be in a bad way. I would learn to repair what you have and save, then when time comes the old bike will be worth something and you will be able to do any need repairs on a newer one. Scooter engines are really pretty simple, getting access to some of them requires many 4 letter words but figure some chinese kid with a 4th grade education put it together so it can't be that hard.

There is much wisdom in what jtc842 says, and sometimes the truth is hard to accept. I feel as he does...if you need to finance a used scooter, you really can't afford it....and more than likely heading down a bumpy road.

I expect to pay off the loan nearly immediately, I'm only 2-300 short what I would need assuming I sell my old bike. Part of that is a way to rebuild my credit, had a bankruptcy a few years ago. Haven't put in the paperwork yet, of course. The private seller wouldn't take payments, but the dealership for the RV250 will. There might be a warranty on that one, I'll know for sure when I go test ride it.
