My brother has a new computer and is having a problem with Windows 8. Have any of you tried the Windows 7 emulators on the market? A preference or ones to avoid? We all may be needing it soon or a switch over to another operating system.

Windows 8 which also has IE10 sucks, it was made for a lab top and not a desk top. Owners of W8 can get a free upgrade to Windows 8.1 with IE11 which you will love, it's what I use and my son even upgraded it on his lap top. In March Windows 9 comes out and it is a very tiny upgrade from 8.1. windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/update-from-windows-8-tutorial#updateWith 8.1 you get your start button back along with a better desktop screen that you are used to with W7. It has options you'll like including a very good outlook email system. Going back to w7 on anything is going to be a waste of time, why? Microsoft has just pulled the plug on all support and is no longer upgrading XP and has almost done the same with Vista and it's only a matter of time that they will do the same with W7 especially with a new W9 coming out soon. Rich can confirm this he works with these programs every day and he tells XP people no when they want work done and he can tell you working with Vista is tough too. He like you loves W7 and I still have two computers with it myself but I've also got a W8 upgrade disk and soon will upgrade them to that and then to W8.1. Microsoft is not even making W8 now a testament of how bad it was thus the free upgrade to W8.1 and you better hurry on this or they'll pull the plug on it too. You will not lose any of your material or settings when upgrading from W8 to W8.1 again it was the best move I ever did. www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=41652

My question would be... what type of problems is he having? Compatibility issues? Crashing? Or is it just alien enough that he's having a hard time using it?
And what do you mean by Win7 Emulator? You should be able to run Win7 in a Virtual Machine, if that's what you're asking, but the performance won't be the same like a native install. I've used Virtual Box to experiment with Linux before and older versions of Windows. I'm sure Win 7 could easily be installed.
If its just a matter of not knowing how to use it, there are supposedly ways to make it function like Win 7 by disabling the Metro (Tile) interface. (I've never done it, since I don't own a Win8 machine) You could also hold out for Windows 10, which is reverting to a more familiar style.
Easier still, you could just trying to install Win 7 on the computer. You'll need a valid license to install it, but you're going to need that for for running it in a Virtual Machine anyway.

Some of the newer machines refuse to take Win7, even on a direct CD install. My daughter has an HP and the stupid thing simply will not take anything less than 8.

I failed to mention new computers cannot be changed back to W7 and did you not read what I mentioned about W8.1? Again it is user friendly and also give you back some W7 features like the left hand corner menu icon which makes navigation a lot easier.
W10 just like W9 does give back some of the W7 features but only one more now than W8.1 which is free. Also like I said the IE11 browser makes IE10 on W8 look pitiful as it is.
W7 had a good run, it's being replaced just as good XP has and horrible Vista did, like it or not time to move on. Even if you could put W7 on a W8 computer support days for it are numbered so why not learn the newer systems and forget the old?

But it would be very happy running one of the latest versions of linux and you would not have to worry about virus. There are a few virus's for linux except unlike windows, you have to put in an administrator password to have anything like a virus install itself.....no self installing crap allowed.

I'm helping by long distance over the computer so I'm not all sure what he is up against, not having experience. I had just heard there are emulators so, I thought I would ask. Personally I'll wait for an improvement like I did with SE.
Thanks to all that gave input.

Windows 9 scheduled for March 2015 and 10 for Sept. 2015 but IMO if you have W8.1 you're wasting your money to buy it because the little features that are different are purely cosmetic and of little value.
I hated W8 and was on the verge of buying a left over new computer with W7 on it but I'm glad I didn't after I upgraded to 8.1.
MY stepson with 8.1 on his lap top is in college and he does things on his now that his friends can't with 7 or 8.

I love Linux. Especially Ubuntu. Problem is there are just a couple of things I have to be able to run and Linux won't do it. Otherwise, my whole house would be on Ubuntu.

nothing can stop you from installing w7. all you need is a hardrive. maybe try fdisk ing that drive to remove any leftover registry entries/ viruses. and install it. i just done an install a couple of months ago for the first time. and no screen came up on my computer saying no you cant install that. go to office depot pull 300 dollars from your wallet, hand it to bill gates then get w81. and if its a waste of time for w7 then it will be a waste of time on 81, or 9 or 10. becuase wait about a year or 2 then oh its no longer supported anymore cause microsoft needs to pump out another system. better constantly upgrade.

If it will not run on linux I just don't need it.
After reading the ULA for XP just before it hit the market I decided to dump windows, I had originally wanted to up grade win98 for XP. I have been using PCLINUX since it came out with 2007beta. I have used mandrake, redhat, suse, mepis, puppy, ubuntu, and tried quite a few others. If I can do it so can just about anyone else, I am not a guru or geek. In the 13 or 14 years I have used linux I have saved more than enough to buy a nice chinese scooter brand new.
Have built 3 computers by just screwing parts together from newegg, tiger, and others together instead of buying a complete one with windows installed. It costs me about a 1/3 of the same quality windows computer. And the best part of all is that gates doesn't see a dime of my money. I do not have anything that says microsoft except the label on an old dell laptop that is running PC out in my shop.
