I don't know either Borg. His message wasn't quite clear to me either. Are you saying you trust SYMs Rich? I'm not understanding your meaning.

An engine is more likely to last if you run it conservatively at around 75%. AMAZING!! Who would of thought!! Of course I knew that KZ. Didn't you do things and say to yourself "I shouldn't be doing this" but you do it anyway? Try an eighty four mile work commute and you'll start to push the speed envelope. I've already put 10,000 trouble free miles commuting on the big SYM at 85 to 90% capacity. I don't give a sh!t who makes the parts or who assembles it, it is so far above the Chinese bikes I've had it's ridiculous. Shall we narrow the conversation? What is the list of scooters I will ride? Here it is: SYM The wife's new SYM had a clutch problem, big deal. A company makes millions of bikes and there's a part or two that's defective. It happens! Please don't hammer me with specific stats, you get the point. To Cookees great credit he has a clutch on the way. OK, I'm done, I ride a SYM, end of story. What??? 75% So what kind of mode of riding is that? Is this the same as the 90 year old grandma with 1/2" thick glasses 35MPH mode type riding?
So that must make the 85 to 90% mode be called riding the piss out if it right? I confess I ride my "Chinese" scooter in between grandma and riding the piss out of it mode so I'll call that mode riding the crap out of it.
Now on the wife's sym, lets just get this story straight now buddy! This is a Sym by-product, a Chiwan built brand named Lance. We already know it's got a Tank frame and low and behold you've already slapped a standard Chinese GY-6 clutch on her so quit trying to pass this scooter off as a real deal Sym, it's a generic Sym!

The 75% is good advice. Think about it, most cars are designed to break 100mph, but very few people ever take their car to that speed. The long life of a well maintained car engine is definitely related to the fact that cars are almost never driven at WOT.
As for the issue of this thread, I went for a ride with some friends on their Hogs yesterday, yes I put up with all the grief for riding my puny scooter! Funny thing is, I kept up fine with them, adn when one of them broke down, I noticed some of the parts they removed while fixing it had some Chinese looking markings on them, and they were not the broken parts. Point being, I don't care what you ride/drive, I would bet a paycheck it has Chinese made parts in it! The only thing I can see the Chinese do wrong as a rule of thumb is use substandard wiring.

Point being, I don't care what you ride/drive, I would bet a paycheck it has Chinese made parts in it! The only thing I can see the Chinese do wrong as a rule of thumb is use substandard wiring. Believe it or not there was a time when they built some engines that ran just as well at 100mph as they did at 60mph, seriously. I remember some of the old Studebakers and even flat head Fords that were set up with overdrive transmissions and gear ratios that allowed them to go to higher speeds and the engine at lower RPMs which didn't stress the engine at all. My dad had a studie that had the pull and engage overdrive manual transmission. You could wind her to 50 in second gear and pull the overdrive handle and drop her into a higher range and hit 90 mph with ease. That damn thing would hit 140mph and have pedal left, scary very scary.
You could run 90mph in second gear and never hit 5k rpm but if you came to a hill you had to quickly drop it out of overdrive, a long time ago indeed. Ford made the long stroke 272 and 292 and you could hit 70mph in second gear and never hear the engine roar. In the 50's they also had the 3-speed manual trannys with optional manual engage overdrive, same engine used in Thunder Road a 49 Ford Custom, the old flathead 8, damn car would peg the speedo and have plenty of HP left.
Ah those were the days.

Yep. we had a 62 Studebaker and it would get up and fly. It had 3 on the tree as I recall and a Hi/Lo level in the middle under the radio. The old AM/FM (Mostly AM) radio.
