2 stroke vs 4 stroke ? By johnjs (Read 1,978 times)

Looking at get another scooter but most i am interested in are 2 stroke...i have a 4 now. Pros or cons between the two? Any advise would be great thanks.

I ran a boat load of two strokes,,,pros,,lots of power for a small mill cause they fire on every stroke,,,very lite weight,,easy to rebuild not as many parts to deal with and respond very well to modifications and can spin really fast,,,cons,,,wear out quick,,,the new ones have oil injection so you don't have to premix but it's another thing to think about if it fails,,they stink and they are noisy and dirty,,,and the regulations on them are tightening and is one of the reasons i went to the stella 4t instead of an older px series vespa,,,i didn't want to pile a bunch of money into something i couldn't register later down the road

I thought that was a pro and not a con. Nothing like the smell of a two stroke first thing in the morning.

I ran 3 cylinder two strokes for quite a while,,one with open expansion chambers,,,boy my neighbors hated that thing ,,,it was nasty/raspy,,,sure sounded great when you pulled the trigger and it got on the pipes gettin on the freeway,,,but the way 4 strokes are now the only way i'd go back to 2t is if i found a cherry vespa that doesn't need too much work and or dough,,i feel california is going to outright ban them,,,but then again i don't know how long i'm going to be in the republic of ca,,,

4 strokes get better gas mileage and you don't have to keep adding oil to the gasoline

Two strokes are lighter,more power, and you don't have to change the oil. It's a personnel call as 2 stroke vs 4 stroke. On a scooter mine is a 2 stroke. Different strokes for different folks.

Problem is, 2-stroke engines were mainly used in scooters during what we refer to as the unreliable years, late 90's-2009. Around 2010-2012, 4-stroke engines became the norm due primarily to emissions requirements. The quality of many scooter brands also have shown a noticeable rise since then. Part of this (perceived?) increase in quality is due to new factories with better production methods and controls that were built in the early 2000s. Another part is the fact 4-stroke engines are not as rough on themselves as 2-stroke engines, after all they fire half as often.

You must be referring to China specific scoots. Vespa,Lambretta,Heinkle,Honda,Yamaha etc. have used and made their reputations off of two strokes since the 1940's I would never trade my two stroke Stella for a four stroke. The sound just goes with the look of the bike.

I like the stella 4t,,but i wouldn't mind a 2t either,,,but i must admit they did a pretty good job with the 4t,,,it does need a pipe and carb tho,,almost anything i've had over the years has needed that

I agree the 4t is a very nice scoot.But with mine and the retro look the ring ding ding sound works well.People can not believe that it is a 2005 scooter which makes me happy in as much as I went to a great deal of effort to give it the vintage look and the 2 stroke with the Sito plus exhaust bring it all together.

That is one thing I like about 2 strokes,,,, they respond very well to intake and exhaust upgrades,,, it's astounding how much power you can get from such a small mill,,, you can imagine what was coming out of my 500's and 750's ,, crazy unmanageable power,,, and with sh!tty suspension and weak brakes,,, ouch

I had a 500 and 750 Kaw three cylinder two strokes back in the day and they ruled light to light. Also had a Suzuki GT550 3 cylinder Very nice bike good power,quiet and smooth. Alot of people were shocked it was two stroke.

Is the fuel economy any better or worse with 2T's? ~10 seconds worth of thought in my brain makes me think that 2T's would be worse, seeing as they fire more often and run at higher rpms.
