Just bought a united motors gp1r and it does not start, it will turn over but not fire. The carb, cdi and battery are new. The motor has a solid ground, it has spark and it is getting fuel. Where do o go from here?

4 things need to happen,,,(1) you have spark (2) you have fuel,,(3) you need compression ,,you need to check the compression to see if you have it ( pull the plug and put your finger over the hole and hit the starter button if your finger gets pushed off the hole you're probably good there),,,and number 4 timing,,,you have to make sure the engine is firing on time,,,you get all 4 she should lite,,,oh and check the fuel to make sure it's good

5- valve lash, set to .004. I've fixed more friend's hard starting problems with a valve adjustment than anything else.

I have set the valve so next I will check the timing. I have never set the timing on a scooter. Where are the timing marks and how do I set it?

Ric812, 2 Questions: 1. When you are trying to start it DOES it attempt to start and FIRE? 2. When you are trying to start it DOES it JUST CRANK CRANK AND DOES NOT FIRE AT LEAST ONCE? If you cannot tell the difference then Get a Video of you trying to start it just a few seconds of you trying to start it is all that is needed. Alleyoop

Alleyoop, the engine just turns over and never attempts to fire. I am going to try and check the timing tomorrow and check back in.

When you set the valves did you bring it up to TOP DEAD CENTER by aligning the CAM SPROCKET like PIC . Also try starting it again and then take the plug out and see if it is WET or DRY. Alleyoop

The plug was wet. And now it is running but I have a strong gas smell and white smoke. Cranking I have to hold the throttle almost half open and while running I can not get it to idled down enough to stop the rear wheel turning

And thank you all for the help. Been working on card for 20+ years and I was worried a little scooter was getting the best of me.

Ok, appears it is getting to much gas if you say you smell gas, is the AIR FILTER CLEAN and not clogged? So do this shut it off and TURN THE FUEL RATIO screw clockwise until it stops THEN turn it counter clockwise 2 turns and try starting it.
