Hi guys, I have for the past year had what was the most reliable and best running scooter I have had in a long time, worked like a dream, however I had to move house and it went from being kept in a garage, to being kept outside, and after having an operation it was stood untouched for two weeks....now it wont fire up
The bike is a lexmoto tornado 49cc, it is 1 year old, aside from having to change a front light it has not needed any other work except a tyre change...
I have got it to start and it idles for a bit then dies, but if I even try and turn the throttle it cuts out completely.
I have charged the battery for a long time, though this is the original battery, I have put a new spark plug in...
I have no money to pay for it to go into a garage, and in fact live miles from one anyway,
I'm really keen to learn how to fix it, in the past i have done things like change bearings, fixed lights etc, so my knowledge is pretty basic..
How can a good running bike just suddenly go so wrong
Thank you for any help, I really do appreciate it!

Try changing out the gas between fresh gas and a new plug. try that first my may have some water in tank which will settle at bottom condensation and a seal tank could do it. Also try removing gas cap see if it starts maybe bad venting.

If that doesn't do the trick you could try making sure the jets aren't clogged.

Thank you, I figured maybe it is bad fuel, as it had been pouring with rain so some might have got into the tank, so if I drain it off from underneath, will it be ok just putting new fuel in? or do I need to clean the tank out ?

Take your time and be gentle with the screws. They tend to strip easily from my experiences. And a basic Carb cleaner would do the trick. Just make sure that you don't damage the float or it's clip.
And remember, YouTube is your friend if you have doubts about what you are trying to do.

Try doing easy stuff drain fuel get a air line blow tank as dry as possible change fuel filter and see what happens try then open gas cap to better venting. Some time over thinking can be a bigger problem then problem at hand.

Some time over thinking can be a bigger problem then problem at hand. Ditto with crfd here. Lets go slow and One thing at a time It only sat for Two Weeks. Extremely Unlikely that jets are clogged. Check spark, Got spark? Try Starting fluid (ether) or Carb cleaner. if it starts on either then its telling you your getting no fuel to the engine.

A lot of people do not like starting fluid, I always have a couple cans aound here. Choke is broke on my tractor, I have been using ether to start it for years. It comes with a straw that can fit into just about any where, and if you start with it you know where your problems are.

Hi guys and thanks for all the replies, so here are things I have done so far -
Drained off the old fuel and put in new Changed the spark plug and checked for spark (there definitely was a spark) Fully charged the battery
I opened up under the seat and looked at the carb but not taken it off as I don't really feel confident with it...
You mentioned starting fuel, how does that work? Where do you put it?
So frustrating because I will have to just leave it if I cannot get it going :-(
It did just go all of a sudden, yesterday it fired up idled for about three seconds then cut out, its doing my head in!

Sounds like it is not getting enough fuel and dies once the fuel goes below the jets. So do this: 1. take the fuel hose off the CARB and stick it in a cup and then CRANK THE MOTOR OVER and FUEL SHOULD COME OUT and into the cup. Also take a picture of the CARB AREA and HOSES maybe you have a VACUUM LINE that is leaking and not allowing enough Vacuum to open the PETCOCK and allow fuel to flow fast enough to fill the carbs bowl. GO AND CHECK OUT THIS THREAD ON FUEL DELIVERY I WROTE UP A HOW-TO CHECK for fuel delivery problem: scooterdoc.proboards.com/thread/7723/check-fuel-deliveryAlleyoop

Thank you! I shall take some pictures tomorrow of the carb area
One thing I have noticed, I went to change the oil, but couldnt as I have somehow lost the socket that fits under the engine, so just checked the dip stick and rather than being the red colour the oil usually is, it looked dirty and dark, I topped it up probably six weeks ago....would the old oil have any impact on it starting? I will change it as soon as I can...
But for now I will just try what you said about cranking the engine and seeing if any fuel comes out into a cup...

No No No do not give up The motor starts which is good it can only be a couple things fuel delivery problem and or the Valves are tight and need adjustment. If its the valves you will most likely find the EXHAUST valve is tight and the motor is loosing compression and will NOT KEEP LOW RPMS or LOW IDLE. If so set both both valves to .003 inchs. Alleyoop
